Key West Help
Try the Ocean Key Resort or the Pier House. They are both at Mallory Square which is a great location in the keys. I prefer Ocean Key to Pier House but both are pretty nice places to stay.
You will do better to contact them directly. Often when you use Expedia or any of those sites, you get NO VACANCY but if you call directly they have rooms available. I think it has to do with commissions they need to pay expedia.
Be careful about the resorts you select. One was perfect for me -- a whole bunch of gorgeous nude men on the beach -- but my husband was quite put out. (It was a gay resort).
I guess had there been a whole bunch of nude women ...
We visit Key West every year and cut out the expensive hotels long ago. The city has so much to offer and we just weren't getting much out of the room. We've stayed in the Best Western Hibiscus for several years in a row with no problems. I like that many of the rooms come with a kitchenette and you can't beat the price. We've never had a bad experience there, and we saved enough money to afford all the extras while we're in Key West. It's a pretty small island, so we walk everywhere. If you stay at this hotel you will be several blocks from Duval street. Worst case scenario we would walk to dinner and drinks and hale a cab back in the middle of the night for 5 or 10 dollars.
If this is a romantic get away the hotels at Mallory Square might be better. I must say sipping on drinks while watching the sunset from your balcony is quite romantic.
Either way I'm sure you'll have a great time. Don't forget to carry smaller bills if you go on any activities. Key West is a 'gratuity expected' city. Our first trip down we got suckered into $20 tips because we didn't have change.
You absolutely must do a sunset cruise. They take you out to snorkel over the reef and once you get back on the boat they have champagne and wine at no additional charge. Even if you don't drink it's nice to watch the sunset over the water. We've used Sebago several times. If you're not sure about boating for a few hours maybe parasailing is for you. It's peaceful and you're not exposed to so much of the currents. Even for those that really love the water, the all day cruises can be really hard on the body. The sun takes it toll and usually knocks you out for a few days, so use caution if you consider an all day water activity. Next to the water activities I highly highly highly recommend renting scooters or an electric car for one afternoon. I personally think the scooters are more fun than the electric cars, and you get more for your money. It's so nice to travel all the back roads.
A lot of people hit Key West expecting beautiful beaches. You won't see much of that from the street. There is one absolutely gorgeous beach, but you have to find it. I can't remember the street, but I'm sure the locals could help you. You have to drive into a "Leave it to Beaver" style neighborhood then you pass through what looks like the remains of an old navy base. I believe its a state park so you have to pay a few dollars to get it. Man oh man is it beautiful!
As you can tell I just love Key West. I'll spare you my wild and crazy stories. Enjoy your trip! You'll have to update us on how it was when you get back.
Hi! Try LA Pensione on Truman Street - I'm sorry I don't have a phone #. It's a beautiful victorian b&b in the heart of it all.
There's the Crown Plaza on Duval near sunset pier - It's great too!
There's a weird haunted KW tour - I thought was cool.
Enjoy dinner @ Meson de pepe - it's authentic cuban cuisine (I should know) and a cuban-american musuem too.
There are great "shows" on sunset pier and they're free.
It's wonderful, a very bon-vivant attitude so if you're put back some folks freedom to be themselves on the island - just be ware because it is a gay friendly island.
Now if you're as crazy as me and my folks - then go to the La-TE-DA show where you will see an excellent show by one of the island's premiere drag queens. My 80 dad was sung to by Marilyn Monroe for his birthday. I still have the video and I can hear my mother cackling as my dad gets his bald little head kissed on by this oh so beautiful
to beautiful to be a man, impersonator.
Whatever you do enjoy!
