more about hair loss
Hi everyone. I am just over 3 months out from my RNY. I have been keeping up with everyone's posts, expecially the ones about hair loss. I have taken the advice I've read and have been taking my vitamins as well as biotin and zinc. Well, to my horror, my hair is coming out in handfuls. I can run my hand through my hair gently and end up with a handful of hair. I had very long hair up until a week ago when I got it all cut off. I was noticing the hair loss then and thought maybe if I cut my hair it would lessen the stress on the hair I have left. Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to accept that I'm going to lose my hair? How much hair loss is typical - all of it? I had bloodwork done a few weeks ago and all seems ok. I'd really appreciate any input and advice. Thanks for your help, Karyn
Hi Karyn,
I also lost lots of hair at 3 months after surgery and Dr.Kim told me that it was going to come back a little after 6 months and he was right. Little by little it's coming out, but I still have short hair it looks healthy plus it's so easy to manage and when I'm in a hurry I wa**** it really fast don't need to worry about blow drying it aor any thing in the car I can fix my hair hahaahaha. Good luck every thing it's going to be just fine. Now remember eat your protein lots of water and your vitamins. I'm sure you are going to be fine. Take care and God bless.

I had DS surgery in July and along about October my hair started falling out and was in really poor shape. Then last month it stopped falling out and has started to fill in again. This month it seems so much healthier. I have read many times that the Nioxin line of shampoos and conditioners help, but I did not use them. I just knew that my hair was going to fall out and there was really nothing I could do to stop it. I also knew that eventually it would stop falling out and grow back. So just be patient. It will grow back. I also experienced hair loss after having bladder surgery many years ago. At that time I was told it was due to the anesthesia. So when you combine the effects of the anesthesia with the rapid weight loss -- well, it takes its toll on your hair.
Oh, by the way after surgery my hair decided it wanted to be curly. I have never had curly hair -- but I do now!
