Complication Insurance
No but one would think if there were complications that they'd be covered already under the agreement of the original self-pay agreement. That's why pre-testings are done to catch maybe any complications before hand. But yes even so there may be some complications but it's just the facts either way your surgeon has to expect as we take chances too.
Frank,
I've never heard of complication insurance for gastric bypass but my plastic surgeon does carry a policy that helps cover the cost of complications. It does not pay anything to the participating plastic surgeon, but it pays up to $5,000 per day to the hospital and also covers other doctor's fees (not the ps - like anesthiologist or another specialist), labs, etc.
The fee charged by most gastric bypass surgeons (that I've heard about) include anything the surgeon has to do regarding a complication. However, the other expenses - hospital, labs, anesthesia /other doctors, etc. are still out of your own pocket.

If you are self-pay -- look for a plan that has a cap on your costs. For example one of the hospitals the Rabkins use in California has a $70,000 cap on costs. So you know going in that at least as far as hospitalization goes the most it would be would be $70,000. I cannot imagine self paying in the states without a guaranteed cap on expenses. The tiniest leak or infection could end up bankrupting you.
