Can anyone give me some advice about what to do with a massive cold and headache? I'm only 3 months post op and have not had to take any medicine except tylenol. But my sinuses are so clogged, my nose is running, I can't breathe, and I have a headache! I'm just scared about what I can take, because I remember a post awhile back where someone took some mydol and ended up going to the emergency room. I tried the phamacist, but he was clueless as to what to do with someone who has had RNY. I usually take something like Tavis D, but now that I've had the surgery, I'm not sure how that may affect me. Any info. would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I just realized that my subject title may not have been a very good choice of words, considering what so many folks have gone through with this whole process. My apologies in advance if I offended anyone. Thanks.

Hi Karyn, Steer clear of NSAIDS, and know that anything like Nyquil that has alcohol in it will really impact you (and could make you dump). I take half the dose of Nyquil and do well with it. Also Delsym is the most potent cough syrup I have found. But I only take half the dose as well. BreathRight strips can help, too. As far as Tavist D goes, it contains Phenylpropanolamine, which has been associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding into the brain or into tissue surrounding the brain) in women. Men may also be at risk. Although the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is low, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that consumers not use any products that contain phenylpropanolamine. FYI. Feel better soon! HTH, Kristen

Karyn, as per our OH Leadership Program these are the Drugs which are Considered Safe Post-op Surgery: Benadryl, Dimetap, Imodium AD, Milk of Magnesium, Mylicon, Robitussin, Safetussin, Sudafed, Triminics(all), Tylenol, Tylenol cold products and Tylenol EX Strength. I use the Sudafed during the day and for bedtime the CVS/Walgreen's store brand of Nightquill. Also I use Airborne but you need to let it sit for at least 5-10 minutes to let it stop fizzing.

Karyn- Being a so recent post-op give your surgeon's office a call in the morning. His/her nurse should know which over-the-counter meds the doc recommends. Red

Thanks so much to everyone for all of your good advice. I bought a bunch of stuff last night! My main problem now is that I am so congested I can't breathe! As Dr. Phi says, I'm a mouth breather!

I was able to take childrens liquid Benedryl. It opened my head. Yup I was sleepy but it worked. And it does not interfere with High Blood Pressure. Stay AWAY from over the counter mixtures. Again call your surgeon and he can help you decide. Hang in there it gets better. I am 16 months out and 133lbs lighter and much better health, Thank God and Thank you Dr Rosenthal. DRJ
