Anyone having problems obtaining health insurance after RNY?

My position was just eliminated and I am now without insurance I am now a contracted self employee and I have to apply for my own health insurance policy. I applied for United's Golden Rule plan and I was DENIED because of the RNY, lap which was done 5 months ago without ONE complication, and a weight loss of 62 lbs. Does anyone have any idea what companies will insure bariatric patients? Is there a certain time frame after surgery in order to get insured? I may be forced to OMIT this from my appication, but I don't like the thought of it. My other health issues include HTN and lower back pain. I am thinking of trying BC/BS next. I had absolutely no problem getting approved with my other insurance, but that company doesn't offer any individual plans. Thanks, Stefanie

Hi Stefanie, I moved from my own Aetna policy to my husband's policy, and was upfrnt that I had RNY. I didn't have any problems. Is there an appeals process with the UHC medical director? HTH, Kristen

Stefanie, If your job had insurance and now you're no longer an employee I believe your employer is required by law to offer you COBRA coverage. This just means you can continue your group insurance coverage through your former employer but you pay the full cost of the premium. This is often very pricey! If you can't find coverage at a reasonable price, COBRA may be an option. Check with your "former" employer. Vickie J.

Stefanie, I know of a gentleman in Lakeland who may be able to help with insurance until you find a new job. My husband and I picked up a policy with him that did just that and it was very affordable at the time. My email address is [email protected] if you want the information. I noticed that you are in Winter Haven- so Lakeland's not the far from you. Good luck, Abbie

Hi Stefanie- My job was eliminated at the most perfect time. I was pregnant with twins and planned on staying home with them anyway. I took the Cobra Coverage for18 months. When cobra was over they offered me a conversion plan. Cost is higher.I used that/There is a small timeframe where you can basically pick your own insurance after you complete. Meanwhile, I still have my Aetna insurace from my past employer of 4 yrs ago. I'm been a stay at home mommy and taking advantage of everymoment I can.! If and When I go back to work, it will be because of insuracnce.
