My husband is hoping to have WLS after I do. He has been wanting to re-enlist in the National Guard and is concerned that having the surgery will prevent his re-enlistment. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi, I don't have the specific information that you need but I "think" he would be turned down due to the surgery. There is issues with malabsorption, becoming hydrated out in the field. And the meals they eat out in the field are high in calories and fats and he would have problems with those...hope this info helps but I'd ask more informed peeps!!

Thanks. That does make sense. I am just hoping that won't prevent him from going through with the surgery. He definitely fits the criteria and will probably have smoother sailing getting approved and covered than I will.

There was some discussion about this on the military board awhile back. At that time the discussion was leaning toward a no-go. But he should probably talk to his own command about it. You can find the military forum at the link below. The discussion took place sometime ago so perhaps you could email the folks who posted the messages to see if there have been any updates. Good luck. http://obesityhelp.com/forums/military/ Red

I have contacted all military branches as I wanted to enlist and as of now none of them will allow you to enlist after having any form of WLS. Sucks, they told me to talk to congress as they make the rules but I figure me talking to congress wouldn't help since I am only one voice.
