gas...

Hi...I'm 10 days out (Oct.25) and am still filled with gas. I walk and walk, like I was advised by my doctor. Here's the deal: when I eat, I can barely get two small swallows down before I have to stop and burp myself like a baby. If I eat more than that without burping, the pain is incredible. I haven't thrown up yet, but it is taking me over an hour to eat and I am getting discouraged. I am in the puree stage. I find that the yogurt and fluids are OK Here's an update...I swallowed a potassium pill with a small sip of water and then had a very tiny taste of cottage cheese. For the next 1.5 hours I had gas that would not come out...it hit my esophagus and I couldn't even speak. I threw up nothing but saliva, about 4 times, and now I am feeling better. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!!

At 10 days out I was still on liquids, jello, pudding at the hardest. And no more than 1 ounce every 15 minutes, for a total of 2 ounces in 30 minute period. Yogurt started at about 3 weeks, and cottage cheese somewhere around 5 weeks. All pills were also crushed or liquid until 2 months. Remember, you are reteaching your body how to eat. Good luck. Thanks, Suzanne. I have reverted back to clear liquids and protein shakes. My surgeon and the book they gave us has us doing pureed protein 1.5 oz, and 1 oz of veg or fruit for days 3-15, and then soft solids. The vitamins are all bariatric and chewable, except for the potassium and Prilosec. I felt much better after this morning's fiasco, and will stay on liquids until my first visit back to the doctor.

Thanks, Lillian! The feeling I had yesterday was just like your soda incident! US Bariatrics has a huge manual outlining our diet for the next year, but for me, I believe puree was way too soon. I still have so much gas from surgery that it is difficult for me to do anyting but fluids. My hospital roommates are all doing great, their gas is gone. I think he really filled me to the rim LOL. Thanks for the suggestions...what is the name of the shake? Cookies and cream sounds awesome! I am doing Unjury brand protein. And yes, Liilian, you are so right...we will all make it We have come so very far and every time I think about loosing I get so excited remembering that the surgery is DONE and the weight is coming off! I feel as if I was given the gift of Life...Thanks again for answering!

Hi Kim: What I did with the Potassium pill was cru**** and I will mix it with my cottage cheese and my 1 oz of fruit and you really don't feel the flavor or anything. Try it like that it might help you in two ways. You'll be getting your potassium in and you'll also will be eating your 1.5 oz of protein and your 1 oz of fruit. It really worked for me. Good luck and keep up the good job.

Great idea, Heidi! My potassium is in a capsule, so it should be a breeze Thanks for the tip!

Glad you are feeling better. Ask your Dr. to switch you to orally dissolving Prevacid, too. Protiein powders in Crystal Light, etc., do wonders to increase ptotein intake if shakes are too heavy. Isopure is a good liquid ptotein, 40 grams a bottle, and less than 200 calories, to get in major protein quickly. I was on 1 ounce every 15 minutes at first, for 12 hous per day!

Hi Im carole from Ocala. I too had surgery on Oct 25th and am still having gas problems and more than the gas is constipation. And I was the smallest loser in my group of surgery pals. 5 measley pounds some lost 18 I nearly cried I felt I did something wrong, which I did not. I had this surgery cause I could not lose weight the conventional way due to too much insulin in my body I hope this will work. Oh I am really scared I wont be a loser too. Good luck to you all

Hi Carole! Congratulations on your surgery! I'm glad everyone is having issues with the gas...makes me fel better knowing I am not alone LOL. My sister had surgery on the same day as I did, and she is constipated, too. We are taking iron supplementaion...are you? I would suggest upping your fluid intake (I know that's really difficult) and see what happens. My sis got some magnesium in hopes she will "move" ;) As far as loosing weight, 5 pounds is wonderful! Especially since you have such a hard time loosing weight. I'm the same way...a real sluggish metabolism. If I don't exercise AND watch what I eat very carefully I just stay status quo. If I'm not mistaken, the surgery will reverse the excess insulin. I will check my book for you. It might take a little longer, but I know you will loose all the weight you want to. Be patient...it will happen and you'll look great! Keep your chin up! Kim
