Searching ...........
I am 25, single mommy. i have been playing with the idea in my mind
for over 1 and finally I am in the last step of getting the insurance
papers done for my sugery. I decided to comment to my mother of what I
was planning to do. She wasnt every supportive as I wanted and thought
she was going to be. She told me that after 2-3 yrs all the weight comes
back and that the surgery is too risky and I might die. I really want
to know what people think and about all of this bring that you have
might have experience something like this ot had already had the
surgery. My mind is set on it but I feel even more alone without
someone's support.
Thelma, Is there any chance of getting your relatives to a Seminar with you to learn about WLS's and also at least one or more Support Group meetings to learn? We're here to Support You but if possible Family Support is important. She's wrong about gaining back if you stick with the plan but she's correct if you don't follow the plan like some quit smoking or drinking but start again once they've lost. This is a LIFETIME Commitment. Not a quick fix and then back to your old ways. As to dying. You could die by not doing something about your weight now. Or just stepping out of your house everyday. Where besides your mother are your other relatives? And friend's? And your local Support Groups?

Though I don't remember many details...when I was younger I did want to have the regular stapling of the stomach but my mom was opposed to it and apparently I listened and didn't do plus I didn't want to have an incision on my stomach. When I recently came to want to have surgery again I did my mom but this time I was more adamant about my decision, and thought she would have to accept it or else. She was not supportive the first time but seeing how big I had gotten and how hard I tried all the diets and exercise programs (they do work but for me I needed to do this as well)...she was more accepting of my decision. When I told my siblings they weren't surprised and were a little nervous but also accepted. Now that everything went well and Im 2 years out and they have seen the amazing changes they are happy I did right about doing. People always doubt what they don't know...so u have to stand stedfast in your decision and let them see the results later on. You are not alone!
Hi Thelma,
I am 4 1/2 years out and have gained back only 4 lbs since my lowest weight. Your mom is incorrect in that. As long as you stick to the program of no snacking and getting in protein and lower carbs, etc. You will be successful. You have to be willing to change the way you do things. I still indulge occasionally, but instead of eating an entire bag of cookies or 1/4 of a pepperidge farm cake at a sitting I have 2 cookies or a small piece of cake. You cannot completely deny yourself (well, you can but it doesn't work) and as long as you know the limits you will do well.
As for dying, you could die from obesity as well. Hopefully, your mom will respect your decision and support you in your endeavor.
Good luck to you.

Thelma-
I am in your neck of the woods. In Miami Fl. I didn't have same experience with my family. However, I only told a few people because to many people believe the hipe and have never done the research you and I have done. Remember this is a desicion that only you can make for yourself. It is however important to have support so I do suggest you try to get your mom up to speed on all new technology surrounding this surgery. I will be 2weeks post op tomorrow. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions [email protected]
Good Luck
Monica
