Hey-thanks for your reply...tell me all about it-I'm supposed to go tonight to the initial meeting @ Sacred Heart. I'm 25, married /w/ 2 small children. I'm a music pastor in FWB. I'm 6'2 and about 375 or so. Reading about people's recovery and stuff has scared me to death. I'm thinkin', "I would much rather work hard and lose it naturally then go through all the trauma. Because you still have to drastically change your lifestyle after surgery, so why change it w-out surgery and lose the weight?" Was it worth it? What's your story?
Hi Stephen! I'm only about two months out from surgery so I am fairly new in the process. It has gone very well for me so far... no problems except for a reaction to some medication that I am supposed to take for a few months. It took me over two years to make my decision to have the surgery. I did hours and hours of research on the weight loss surgeries and doctors too. It is not a decision to make lightly. For some of us it is a last resort...a life saving process. If you are still having thoughts that you might be able to do it on your own then I would say maybe you are not ready for the surgery. (That is just my opinion.) Yes, it does force a drastic lifestyle change but a "FORCE" is what I needed. I had tried to do it on my own all my life and just could not maintain it. As you read on here, there are some people who have problems (most of them temporary) and no surgery is without risk, obviously, but one just has to weigh the pros and cons, risks and benefits and decide whether or not they want to undertake the surgery.
I would suggest you do like I did and attend his seminar so you can see exactly what the process entails and ask questions, and then you could start to attend the support group meetings where you can meet actual guys and gals who have had the surgery.
If I can answer any specific questions let me know.
Stephen I am so glad you went to the seminar! Good luck with the insurance process. If you haven't already, go to the Insurance forum here and search to see if you can find your insurance listed and see comments on the expereince that others have had with that particular insurance. Getting that insurance approval can be a real trying time. What kind of insurance do you have? Some insurance companies won't cover it at all, some companies require different things such as a six month medically supervised diet, and then some approve based upon your BMI and/or existing medical problems you might have. My insurance wouldn't not give me a definite answer on whether or not they required a medically supervised diet history (it is like they wanted to leave that possibility open if they decided to ask for it), so I got one of the forms from Dr. Lord's office and started seeing my primary doctor each month to discuss diet, exercise, etc. She filled out one of the forms each month and kept it in my chart in case I should need it. I got to month five and got approval without it, but at least I was ahead of the game if they had decided to require it. Is your primary doctor in favor of the surgery? Best wishes with whatever your decision is.
Hi Stephen,
Dr. Lord did my surgery on March 8,2006.
Almost 8 months ago, I had the Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery. I'm down 94 lbs.
I did not have any complications.
I have worked hard. This is not an easy process to go through.
However past diets have failed and yo-yo dieting is not healthy either.
You do drastically change your eating habits and lifestyle.
For one I no longer crave sweets. I can stand and walk for quite a long time. I no longer have pain in my knees and I don't have to take aleeve for my back pain, that I use to have.
Was it worth it? YES!!!!
I've added years to my life, I am healthier. I laugh alot and I have so much life to live. My husband says he got back the beautiful ,playful woman he married 24 yrs. ago.
Life is great ! I feel great !
I use to live to eat. Now I eat to live. My eating habits have changed. I can't eat nearly as much as I use to. Do I miss it. Not really. I don't have the stomach I use to have, so I can't fill it up like I use to. I still eat great tasting foods. I still go out to eat. I just don't go to All you Can Eat Buffets. I can eat all I can eat anywhere. Most always I have to take leftovers home. So I get two meals for the price of one.
Dr. Lord is a wonderful caring person as well as a brilliant surgeon.
I would go through it all again tomorrow, if I had to.
The worst part of it all for me was the prep. before surgery. A few days of a liquid diet.
Don't get me wrong ,I had a few days of real pain along the abdominal wall. Then it eased up some and with each passing day, it got better.
There is a support group meeting on wednesday Nov. 1st at 6:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Greenhut Auditorium.
You are welcome to come and listen to the group. Lots of people come and listen before having the surgery. It would give you the oppertunity to hear from those who have had the gastric surgery as well as lap band.
Best wishes to you,
Karen
