Is it true what I am hearing?
That once you have either surgery.. you will never be able to drink a soda again, or a engergy drink? I like the Monster engergy drinks.. or that you will never be able to have a milk shake.. or a pizza? Never have a mixed drink or a beer again?
I understand the whole idea is a new healthy life, and that change is the way.. but just wondering is the statements true..
No - that is not true for most people. Everyone is different, but most long-term post-ops can eat a pretty normal diet, just less of it. Before my surgery I thought I'd never be able to eat so many of my favorite foods and that just isn't the way it has turned out for ME, others may have different results.
I developed mild lactose intolerance after my wls so I can only eat a milk shake if I take a Lact-Aid tablet, and then only a couple of ounces which is fine with me b/c I don't need the empty calories. I can eat pizza but choose not eat the crust, just the toppings to reduce the carbs and of course, I only do it once in a while. I can eat the toppings off 2 or 3 slices and I'm full. I have only had a sip or 2 of soda when I got choked on popcorn at the movies but it is b/c I CHOOSE not to drink soda, not that I can't have them (same thing with alcohol). I don't crave sweet sodas like I used to so I choose not to fill my pouch with them - I'd rather have water or Crystal Light.
Although I haven't had much problem with food, some folks do have difficulty so you have to look at all sides of the story. Good luck on your journey.

NONE of that is true. It depends on your doctor first of all. then like PIZZA, it has to be super thin, beer i was never told no but mix drinks had too much sugar in them. see its about your new stomach. sothings work better than others. milk shakes have allot of sugar and I will get very sick if I have them and the energy drink i get the jitters from at this point. but I can ea****ermelon which allot of ppl cant do.
not to fear. if you want this bad enougth... no matter what you cant have you will still find happiness in other aspects of life!!!
best wishes,

I am just out of the gate, so my personal experience is limited, but my neighbor is 2 years out and she drinks wine - lots of it ...sometimes
At first, she made spritzers, but the further out she became she can now drink it straight. She told me beer would be sipped and maybe I could have one because its too filling for the little stomach. Its too soon to try it and I really don't want alcohol yet and I confess to pre-surgery of being a HUGE beer drinker.
Doughy bread it very filling and I imagine it stays like that because of the size of our new stomachs. Thin crusted pizza or like pita pizza's or someother altered recipe will definately cure pizza cravings.
I read some folks drink pop and others tastes have changed. Someday I would not mind having a diet ginger ale - especially to add some Capt. Morgans in
but not ready yet. I am only 6 weeks out.
Somehow the surgery changes what you want to eat. Maybe once I heal I will want all the 'before' foods, but for now its a struggle just drinking to stay hydrated and eating enough not to feel weak.

I am a patient of doctor Jawad's and I was told not to have any carbonated beverages at all EVER AGAIN!!! I have to admit, I was hooked on Diet Coke before my surgery and I almost chickened out of the WLS because I was afraid I just could not live w/out my Diet Coke. I know that sounds pathetic but the Diet Coke was my morning pick me up and I was completely addicted. I had to come to terms with the idea of truly changing my addictions before I went through with the surgery. I am happy to report I have not had any carbonated drinks since my surgery and do not even want them. I was also told I could NEVER have alcohol. That does not bother me so it really was not a concern. I guess all doctors give different medical advice but I can attest to the fact that your tastes do change and your body begins to crave healthier foods. I am thrilled to have had the WLS and have absolutely no regrets. Good luck with your decision.

If all those things were true, would that keep you from having the surgery? The question perhaps should be, are you willing to give up and change whatever you have to in order to use this tool for weight loss? I am not trying to be harsh, just a reality check . Reality is, people lose weight with this surgery, and they also gain it back because they went back to the old habits that got them fat in the first place. for those of us, me included, who are addicted to food, just staying away from certain things is best.
Yes, post op you can have an occasional soda, energy drinks are loaded with sugar, and sugar makes you dump, after a year, sugar still makes me dump, but even if it did not, I'd stay away from it, because I know me, I'd eat sugary things. Milk shake are high in carbs, you can get sugar free ones but again, this is something you have maybe once a year? why because it is empty calories. Pizza, sure, eat the cheese and stay away from all the bread. Alcohol in little amounts can make us drunk quick, plus are high and empty calories.
So in short, you can have these things, usually when you have met your weight loss goal. Can and choosing to are two different things. does this make sense?

I agree with Tami.
I guess I was so unhappy (and unhealthy) I was ready to make any sacrifice to battle my lifelong problem with obesity. WLS weightloss is not without price.....is it a price you are willing to pay?......and I don't mean a monetary price.
Please, I'm not throwing fire darts but these are things you have to weigh for yourself.

thank you everyone for taking the time to answer my question!!
Let me first say that if not having a simple shake, or engery drink means that I will not have to be FAT anymore and will be happier with myself.. YOU can be very sure that I would give that up!!
I know that my new life will be extremly different, and I am ready for that..
I have stopped drinking Soda's before, and I did that for over a year.. I ended up drinking them again when we were staying with friends and thats all they had.. and you couldn't have paid me to drink the water from that tap!! long story.. but I will carry my own supplies or go to a store.. in my new life.. I just didn't realize I was so weak and just ended up drinking them again.
I don't drink them a lot, really not my fav thing..
But yes I could give up almost anything in my life to be healthy and at a safe weight again!!
thanks again..
