Pre-op DIET
Help. I am having surgery next Tuesday, the 8th and on Friday i was told by the drs office to start the diet, 2 shakes and an atkins menu dinner. Well needless to say i have had the hardest time in sticking to it. ANY suggestions.......I have done pretty good with elminating all caffine, but i an absolutely going nuts right at this point. I would like to know what happens if you keep eating the way you want until the surgery?
I will just be honest with you Elena. This surgery is a tool, if you use it you will be successful, if you don't, you will be like many who fail at this surgery and gain their weight back. Your surgery is next week. This is how you will have to discipline yourself to eat the rest of your life. You just have to pull yourself up by thee bootstraps and make yourself stick to the pre op diet. Get rid of junk food and keep looking at whybyou are doing this surgery. what are your goals.....put celery sticks in your mouth when you go crazy, get up and walk and look at your goal list. Just do what you have to do, because its nodifferent post op. we have to eat protein, fruits and veges, we have to take our vitamins and exercise, we have to drink....there are alot of we haves the rest of our wls life. This is just a little time Elena, you can do this, you really can. Food is not your friend. Like me, you are addicted to food, and we just can't believe the power it has over us. But you are stronger than that cookie or pizza. You can overcome the pull of food, and you will have a tool to help you become someone you never thought possible.
So, off my soap box, I believe youcan do this!!!!
blessings, Tami
Elena, my surgeon had me start the Protein(Atkins) Diet (meats, cheeses, eggs) as part of my 6 month Doctor's Supervised Diet required by my insurance prior to my RNY as to not only lose weight but to change my eatting habits. As the months went by so did the portain getting smaller & smaller. Then two weeks prior of my date the diet went to just protein drinks with no food at all. It was tough at times but I wanted & needed the change.
You can do it! Just keep positively thinking, Mike
"Positive Thinking" sounds so easy to do, i am trying with all my might. I didnt have to do the 6 mth diet, cause i am guessing since i went to so many other weightloss places. Believe me i do want the change, I am doing better today, i was just having one of those moments last night. One week today i will be having my surgery, and i wont be surprised if i have a few more. But thank you to everyone on this site for being so helpful.
the pre-op diet got me thinking and wondering.... I'm not much of a veggy fan... but I love love love fruit.... when you are pre and post op... they say eat all the veggies and fruit and protien.... could you go heavy on the fruit and light on the veggiest if you aren't a veggy fan? or is it gonna be something I'm just gonna have to hold my nose and choke it down?
I know it's really hard to stick to the diet, but just think of the rewards of it. Think of the blessing you were given to have this tool to become a healthier you. When Dr. Jawad goes in and the liver has not shrunk since the tests it could be possible that he will close you back up and cancel the surgery. I'm not saying that to scare you, just letting you know what the possiblities are. You can do this!! Just try to stick to it the best way you can. The first few days are the hardest. Believe in yourself!!!
You CAN DO THIS!!!

Elena, we are put on the liquids to shrink the liver as they need to mve it to get to the Stomach. And don't be eating solid stuff as they need your stomach cleared out too.
Kelsey, the post-op diet is Protein which heals your wounds & re-connections faster.
for the first 12 months my surgeon has us on meats, cheeses, eggs, etc. no veggies or fruits as these even though they have protein as have carbs. Carbs make you want more carbs. And after the 12 months we can work in those veggies but still no fruits for another 6 months (sugars in fruits) but before eating any veggies were told to make sure we've eatten our protein, which thinking leaves no room for the veggies.
ME
Michael,
I cant believe you cant anything but Protien for the next 12 months.. WOW!! We were back to normal after 2 months.. everything in moderation. Ya know?
I still dont really eat any sweets (sugar free fudgecicle is about as close as I get), but I LOVE my veggies, fruits and my juice!!
I have a few more carbs than I really should.. but for the most part, I'm eating 100% better than I was before surgery! So I'm happy!!
Amy

they do this for a reason..... i had to do nothign but shakes for 2 weeks... no solid food.... they reason they told me that they did this was because it helps shrink the liver.... obese people tend to have huge fatty livers making surgery even more dangerous..... keep up with that good work... soon this will pass and you will be on your way to being one hot mama
