Eating for the First 2 Weeks
Hi All,
I wanted to know what creative things you all were able to eat right after surgery. I have my list from my nutritionist that consists of the following:
4oz whey protein/milk - this i got down pat - no problem.
2oz "low fat" cream soup (is there a particular brand?)
2oz juice - is there a sugar free juice out there - I can't find one.??
4oz water - yeah..lots of water
There has got to be some other things I can have. I'm really having a hard time and can't seem to satisfy my hunger with the whey protein. Perhaps I don't have a choice.
I did try 4oz of clear chicken broth. that was OK...just wish I could put some crackers in the soup. Maybe in a few weeks I can do that.
Any suggestions are greatly welcomed!!

It's only Two Weeks, if you stay busy such as walking & sleeping the time will fly by.
Try to stick to what your surgeon has prescribes for your eating now. All surgeon's are different. Mine had us on Pure Proteins right away. Even before leaving the Hospital. I ate scrambled eggs to prove it'd stay down which it did. Then and still now I'm eating an Egg - cooked all sorts of ways. Meats & Cheeses. One ounce Two is too much and thus would need to lay down for an hour or so. Like a buffet dinner.
And to drink, Crystal Light but Walmart's brands are the same but much cheaper & more flavors. Zero calorie drinks.
We are on CLEAR liquids for the first 2 days and FULL liquids for the next 4 weeks.
Full Liquids we enjoy:
Carb Control or Blue Bunny carb freedom Vanilla Creme Yogurt (no fruit pieces)
Campbells makes low fat cream-of soups- we make them as directed and then strain
Diet V-8 Splash
Propel Fitness Water
Crystal Light (I prefer the name brand- the other brands seem to mix up gritty)
Isopure High Protein bottled water things- they sell them at GNC- about $3.50 each with 40 g protein and no carbs- the mango orange was tasty. Pour over LOTS of ice and sip through the day as your body won't absorb all the protein in one shot
sugar free pudding, s/f jello, s/f popsicles, s/f fudgecicles
Ricotta cheese w/tiny bit of splenda
EAS Low carb/Hi Pro shakes (chocolate)
EAS Low Carb Muscle Milk shakes (choc milk) - surprised at how much I liked this!
any kind of low sodium broth (chicken, beef, vegie- I have always used the Swanson brand- it comes in paper containers you can just pour out a little and close it back up- less waste!)
Hunger? What's that???
I'm still a newbie postop- I can watch Food Network for the first time in my life and feel NOTHING- it's so amazing. I hope it lasts!
**Correction, I feel SOMETHING when I see Tyler Florence- but it's not hunger!!

I wasn't on a liquid diet after my surgery but I was on a "mushy" diet for 6 weeks. My physican's recommended pinto's and cheese from Taco Bell and also mashed potatos and gravy from KFC. I could only eat a few spoons but it was so good! I ate mashed up little ravioli squares, I couldn't tolerate eggs but they were on my list. I ate the low fat cream of chicken and mushroom soup. I had a very hard time with protein drinks and I still don't ever drink them. I know bad bad ...
Tyler Florence - SIGHHHHH

Wow- Taco Bell and KFC??!?! It's incredible how vastly different each surgeon is.
Were you afraid to take that first bite? I hesitated with my first jello the morning after surgery, but I'm fine with that and almost ALL the other liquids now. Bill made Cream of Chicken with Herb tonight and I almost threw the tiny cup across the room- it was HORRIBLE tasting. He fixed me something else.
I wouldn't say you are "bad" for not having protein drinks. It's all about choices, you know?
We have been eating low carb for several years and I am used to the taste of the shakes, for that I am glad because it makes me feel human to get protein from a variety of sources.....

Hey yes I was afraid to eat but I knew it was mushy ushy stuff so I wasn't too panicked. I had a very detailed list of things I could eat after surgery and they were specific down to the restaurant and what to order. They said the pinto and cheese that was the only thing I ate from Taco Bell was a great source of protein and it was mushy. I also just did the mash tators with gravy from KFC for some reason they stayed down and were yummy. I love the way protein shakes tastes but they made me
so I stayed away from them. I bet I could do them now since I am 7 months out and I should get some and try them again. I can eat scambled eggs now but I couldn't for a month or so after surgery they made me so sick. I ate some roast I did in the crock pot that is the first red meat (other than ground beef) I have had since my surgery. I was afraid to eat it but it went down and I didn't have any problems with it.
