Negative People
Ok, now i just found out that i am having surgery Aug.8th, and now i am hearing::: are you sure you want to do this?, do you realize what you getting into? things could go wrong, you wont be able to eat and among other coments. I know i shouldnt let people get to me but i am. Its making me really mad.
I want to be as happy as i was the other day..........................

I hear the same things too from time to time. Always from people who are thin and have never had an issue with obesity. It's funny how everyone says that you aren't going to be able to eat again... It's like what? No, I will eat differently. Much less and much healthier. People seem to have in in their heads that we just want to be able to wear a bikini or something. There is a very very small part of this, for me anyway that is about looking good.It just goes hand in hand with feeling good. But, it's about feeling good and being healthy. And not worring that every little pain that I get means that I'm having a heart attack or a stroke. Or, that my diabetes will become so out of control that I'll go blind or loose my limbs. Or that most of all, I won't be there to see my son grow up.
So far, to my face, people have been supportive. There is no telling what is being said behind my back though. Most of the time, people are truely concerned. They are just not educated enough to know what the surgery is all about. Too many times they only remember the "tragic stories" that they hear on the 11:00 news. Instead of the success stories.
Remember, you are doing this to LIVE! You are doing this for your, spouse, children, loved ones and especially yourself!
Elena of course people they are going to talk about negative probabilities. I think is their way to make sure you really know everything about pros and con.
Do not be sad or upset
and be strong and sure of your decision. I know it is easy to said this but I am trying my self not to take personal the comment of the "negative people" Some they don't know how we feel or how sensitive we are with the issues.
Take care and keep in touch.

Oh boy do I feel your pain . if I had a dime for every negative remark I could have paid for my surgery in full and not worried about getting my insurance to pay for it!
I think people in general just hear the negative things like media coverage and stuff like that. Also, back in the day before they did it with laproscopic (spelling) it was much more dangerous so people hear horror stories and just run their mouths and don't have the slightest idea what they are talking about! I remember when I was pregnant with each of my children it was the same thing people want to give you their "badges of honor" stories and scare the fool out of you! You just need to stay strong and remind yourself that this is a great thing you are doing for yourself. Just try to ignore the negative and don't worry about what people say! You just surround yourself with positive people who support you and you will be fine!
Ohh also there is always a person who knows someone who knows a girl who knew this guys cousins, uncle's, nephew who died from the surgery 15 years ago!
COME ON PEOPLE! GIVE US A BREAK!

How about "you're taking the EASY way out"...that and much more. It's just people who don't understand and think is an easy way out for us..will always talk. But you know, like we know all about the struggles with obesity etc. IF you feel confident in what you are about to do - then go for it but also understand that there is a risk involved - a huge risk (as we have known before you)...with that being said - GOOD LUCK! It's a lifestyle change.
I didn't really have this problem. I am a nurse and most of the people that I know and work with know the benefits of this surgery. Now remember most of these people who are trying to discourage you might just be scared that something might happen to you. Don't let them get you down. Tell them that you are going to have it done no matter what they say, so if they would please keep the comments to themselves you would appreciate it. Now let me reassure you it was the best thing that I ever did for myself. Yes there are things I want and can't eat, like soda and brownies. But the benefits far outway those cravings. Good luck to you and keep your head up.
