Med Staff Naive to BP needs
I had surgery for hemmorhoids last week and was surprised how naive the medical staff is about BP surgery and needs of BP patients. I had surgery early in the morning, and returned to my room by 2pm. It was 6:30p and I still had not been sent any food for lunch or dinner. I had my husband inquire as to the timing of getting something to eat. When he returned, the staff commented, "Your wife is a GBP patient, so we didnt order anything for her". My husband told them, yes, but I still need to eat! They didnt realize I still eat normal food or even what kind, even after explaining my dietary needs to a staff member - High Protein, No Sodium, and Sugar Free.
I couldnt eat the protein bars I brought - needed to eat SOFT foods while waiting for a bowel movement. Luckily my husband brought me cottage cheese any my yogurt drink w/protein mixed in or I would have starved to death!
I tried to enlighten the nurses and nurse techs. for future use. Just kills me when I feel I am assessing my own condition. Telling the Drs./Surgeons what I can have and what I can't have. I'm still learning and they have the degree!
