Liver Profiles have Doubled in 3 mos. time

I am 9mos. Postop, and I went for hemorrhoid surgery 1.5 weeks ago. When doing the blood work-up, my General Dr. called me in telling my my Liver profile had doubled - we did another blood test and after that 1 week (from preop blood work) my liver profile elevated some more. Went for liver/pancreas ultrasound today. Only pancreatic cancer/history in maternal grandparents. Dr. told me to lay off B-12 and daily vitamins for now. No Excedrin Tension Relief (Aspirin free) if I can help it for my migraines. I go back in 2 weeks for another blood work up to see if there is an elevation. At 6mos. Postop, I was told to switch my Multi-Vitamin to increase my iron levels (they were too low, anemic). This was the first time they were below the normal levels at 6 mos., so I switched to One-Source Women's Multi-Vitamin. Since 6mos. Postop, I have only taken One-Source for Women (daily), 500mg Calcium Citrate (daily), Benefiber (daily), 60gm. or more of protein (daily), 80-100oz water, veggies/fruit, avocados for potassium (when needed). At 6 mos. I was taken the Excedrin Migraine Relief - Dr. didnt recommend it and encouraged me to switch to aspirin free or try to limit to 1x a day. But at that time, I think I was taking 1 dose a day. (Used to take 4 Rx pills daily for migraine prevention pre-op). Started taking Protonix for stomach acid at 7-8 mos. PostOp (daily). Only thing is hubby works in Columbia, South America. Not sure if anything may have polluted from his water source or not. His liver numbers were ok at my 6 mos.PostOp time frame as well. He has all shots, and stays pretty healthy, but the last 3 mos. his living conditions have not been good - even though he's govt. housed. We're wondering if that could be a possibility. Just at a loss, next step is a hepatitis testing!! Just when I started getting my numbers in check and I was feeling pretty healthy. Just putting out feelers if any one has had Liver enzymes overproducing as well.

At 16 months out, my liver enzymes came back elevated for the first time. They were still high at 17 months out. We are going to re-test in Aug. and if they're still high my pcp will try to figure out what is going on. I don't take Tylenol or anything that is suspected of causing liver problems. But we will look more closely at my supplements if they're still up next month. Good luck! I hope you can get a handle on what is causing you a problem. Vickie J.

I had high numbers several yrs ago prior to WLS. I was taking the same Excedrin you were taking and Tylenol a few times a day for migriane and neck and back pain. I dumped them down the toilet and haven't had them nor a pain pill since and my numbers are good. My WL surgeon did do a liver biopsy and told me the was evidence I had a fatty liver but he never told me why he took it. I was under impression since he took out my gallbladder as a precautiom (he always removes it with RNY) and it was fine that liver biopsy was routine for him. I am positive taking any meds on a regular basis can cause liver damage. Since I never smoked, dont drink or eat meat I was confused about this. Dr. told me fatty liver can be hereditary. I take the purest forms of vitamins (no additives at all) and have for 25 years and thought I don't put anything that can damage my liver in my mouth, I read all labels for side affects if there is a med I must take.. My daily packet of vit and supplements include Phosphatidylcholine. I did some research on the web and decided to I added more Phosphatidylcholine which helps cleanse a fatty liver to daily intake. Keep us posted.

I'd been having quite a few hypoglycemic episodes and saw my PCP. He noticed my liver function tests elevated. I have done it 4 times (the blood tests) and he wants me to see a GI doc but I wrote to my surgeon and he said this is common (after WLS) to have fatty liver disease, and it can lead to cirrhois of the liver w/o you even taking alcohol. I go for my appt on 8/3 so i don't know what testing is to be done...but hopefully we can figure it out and get healthy again. Best of luck!

Forgot to mention, go easy on avacado. It is my favorite but can only eat a tiny bit at a time...its very high in fat and I have to be very careful how much fat is in my diet or I will double over in pain but maybe that is just me.

Thanks for the insight of everyone! I had a spot on my liver "fatty liver" when they took out my gallbladder 4 years ago. So this could possibly be this - Dr. wants to a liver biopsy if 8/2/06's blood work comes out increased as well. We'll have to wait and see. No worries about taking in too much avocado, only use 1/2 of one when I have leg cramps and then thats it.

Do you still have your gallbladder? High liver profile can be caused by a bad gallbladder. Something to do with the gallbladder being inflamed will put too much pressure on the liver and cause the enzyme level to increase. That is why my level was high, so since then I have had my gallbladder removed and I think everything is okay now. Best wishes, Rhonda

Hope you can find out exactly what is going on. This concerns me as my liver enzymes are already elevated (have been for a few years now) and I haven't even had my surgery yet. I've had all the testing, including full hepatitis panel, and most doctors conclude mine is fatty liver because of my weight. Betty
