I'd like to know if anyone here tried eating disorder counseling before making the decision to have weight loss surgery. The reason I ask is that my sister asked me if I had considered trying that. She told me that not all overwieght people have eating disorders so she wanted me to consider that this may be my problem and that it could be the answer for me instead of surgery. Even though she knows I've tried a zillion other things. I told her I'd post this to the forum to see what others had to say about it even though it really doesn't make sense to me. To me, it seems that anyone who over eats has an eating disorder and ..... don't all overweight people over eat? But I promised her I'd post to see if anyone can help clear up the question.. so here I am. Thank you, Marianne C. Hudson Florida

Marianne, you would want to talk to a NutritionistDietitian. Check on the top of this page under Professional. There are a few great ones in the Tampa Bay area. Some insurance companies require you to be interviewed by one too. I used Dr.Betty Wedman-St.Louis 727-391-6198 in St.Petersburg, even though it was not required by my surgeon or my iHumana Gold Plus Insurance. But other wise to be prepared for the surgery it's another crutch to lose weight, just like other unsuccessful diets, in my opinion. Mike

I see a counseler who specializes in eating disorders and it really has enlightend me tremendously!! I never fully realized the extent of my eating problems. I whole heartedly reccommend people getting some counseling for eating disorders it really does help. I didn't do it before surgery but I continue it now after surgery. It is such a emotional roller coaster and I now realize that if I don't conquer these problems now eventually I wll probably end up back where I started off. You can only live side by side with an eating disorder for so long before you find yourself back to your old eating habits. It truly is a great help! In my opinion.... go for it!! And to answer your question about all overweight people over eating... yes I would say most overweight people do over eat, but the problem lies in why do we overeat and needing to find new ways of thinking and coping to resolve those overeating issues!! Hope this helps Jo Ann
