FOR ALL MY JEWISH WLS FRIENDS
I NEED SOME INFORMATION REGARDING WHEN YOM KIPPUR COMES AROUND. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE JEWISH LIKE ME, AND HAVE FASTED IN THE PAST, ARE WE ALLOWED TO FAST AFTER WLS? I KNOW IT'S A FEW MONTHS AWAY, BUT WHILE IT WAS ON MY MIND I THOUGHT I WOULD ADDRESS THE ISSUE.
I LOOK FORWARD TO ANY RESPONSES REGARDING THIS. ACTUALLY, YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO BE JEWISH TO HAVE AN ANSWER ABOUT FASTING.
THANKS GUYS.
JOANNE
Not Jewish...but think it's Oct. 2nd. Don't know how long your fast would have to be so can't say whether you could do it post WLS or not. But I know as a Catholic if we have a health condition that prevents us in fully particiapating in a fast we are o.k. and are suppose to find another way to sacrifice. But hey some accuse of us of always bending the rules...look at St. Patty's day this year...I completely disagreed with that.

Joanne,
I am Jewish and I have been banded. I checked with my Rabbi before the High Holidays came up to ask him what do I do and conferred with my surgeon. As you know Jewish Law allows you to do whatever is needed to preserve life. My surgeon said there is nothing wrong with the fasting, as long as you remain hydrated since you are taking in very little liquids on a normal basis so to speak. I have meds I have to take, so I could drink a little extra water when I took them, because of medical concerns. My Rabbi fully approved. I had no problem with fasting, except for being hungry like everyone else! And just be careful when you break the fast. Remember, small bites, chew well! And since you haven't had carbs for over 24 hours, enjoy your meal!
