Hello, It's been a long while since I've been back on this forum.
I have afib and the older I've gotten, the worse it is. Now comes the time I need to start anticoagulation therapy. My doc prescribed Pradaxa, but the pharmacy says that's a no go for people with Bariatric surgery. I asked her if she was familiar with the DS procedure and if it was a factor in whether or not Pradaxa can be used. She did not know. I'm wondering if anyone here might have any information. Or some kind of online medical reference for this.
I cannot ask my surgeon as he retired in 2010. My surgery was in 2008.
Thank you in advance.
Update: I went to the hematologist last week. He believes that the problem is caused by over-supplementation. I am going to have 5 phlebotomies and then retest my blood. He stated that organ damage is unlikely because my ferritin level was below 1000 and was short term.
Why the NP at the weight clinic continued to tell me to take iron, I don't know. They'll be getting a letter from me. (Not that it will do any good.)
Thank you for all your input.
My tests for inflammation came back normal and the genetic testing for Hemochromatosis came back with only one bad gene, so I don't have the disease, but I am a mutant gene carrier.
I've been referred to a hemotologist for further examination.
I continued to take iron because my other iron levels were low at the doctor's recommendation. I have since stopped supplementing.
Thanks.
ETA: I also modified my iron supplementation as recommended by the folks at Vitalady.
Actually, my ferritin jumped from 55 to 141 at my 6 month post-op labs and pretty much continued up at the same trend until I switched to proferrin in July. Then it really jumped. I had blood work done yesterday for inflammation and a test for genetic markers for hemochromatosis (no family history that I know of). I am a non-drinker and I am at a normal weight.
The recommendations by my weight loss clinic were to continue iron supplementation to maintain my other iron related levels and no concern was shown for the increase in ferritin until I questioned the levels several times. My regular doctor is very engaged at this point.
Thanks for the reply.
I have been on reduced iron since January, which flattened the increase a bit. Then changed to proferrin ES in July. That's when my ferritin skyrocketed. I'm actively engaged with my doctor to get this figured out. I was just wondering if others were experiencing the same issues.
Thanks for your reply.
I had my DS in 2008 and since then, my ferritin level has been increasing since then. The normal range is 6 - 170. Pre-op, I was at 55. Six plus years later, I am currently at 722. All other iron and nutritional levels are normal. I have googled around and am finding nothing.

Does anyone have any knowlege regarding plastics through Federal BCBS?
I agree with the stool softener suggestion. I took 3 softeners per day for the first 6 months after surgery and it helped tremendously to keep the constipation at bay.
Giant filled cream puffs. They had them in South Dakota, but I haven't seen them here in the Northwest.
Good thing, too.
The thing that tempts me is eating it while it's still warm and not saving it for later.
What does his bloodwork look like?
Is he taking his vitamins?
Is he being compliant with getting protein?
Is he working with his doctor on the issues he's having?
...all lattes are large breves.
For me, it's my stomach saying, "Ate at Subway again, eh?"
