Anticoagulation therapy after DS?

Hello, It's been a long while since I've been back on this forum.

I have afib and the older I've gotten, the worse it is. Now comes the time I need to start anticoagulation therapy. My doc prescribed Pradaxa, but the pharmacy says that's a no go for people with Bariatric surgery. I asked her if she was familiar with the DS procedure and if it was a factor in whether or not Pradaxa can be used. She did not know. I'm wondering if anyone here might have any information. Or some kind of online medical reference for this.

I cannot ask my surgeon as he retired in 2010. My surgery was in 2008.

Thank you in advance.

Wag more, bark less.

I have a VSG rather than a DS, but have been on Eliquis in the past without any issue (not needed since the ablation). I'm not sure of the differences between the two, but that may be an alternative. There is a good likelihood that the pharmacist is referring to the RNY as "Bariatric surgery, all" as that has been the most common procedure the past few decades, so its limitations tend to get carried over to all procedures (similar to the "no NSAIDs" rule - definitely bad news for a bypass, not so much for sleeve based procedures.)

I find a good resource for DS info to be Dr. Keshishian's site - dssurgery.com. He has an extensive backlog of articles and blog posts in there, though unfortunately organized by date rather than subject so you just have to hunt around. But, if there are any common meds that are contraindicated for the DS he would likely discuss it there someplace.

No idea, but have you posted on any of the TDS FB groups? There is probably someone who has had this issue.
