Lap Band to D-Switch
Hi y'all! Im in the process of getting approved for the DS with my insurance.
Somd background on me. I got the Lap Band back in 2010 and in 2011 I started to develop a hiatal hernia so I removed all restriction. Shortly after they, I moved to a very rural area out of state with no experts in bariatric patients (for at least 100 miles) and 799 miles away from my surgeon. I had lost about 50lbs with lap band. And I've continued to struggle with my weight since then. Losing and gaining.
Now I'm back in the city! And after talking to my original surgeon, he thinks d switch is the best option for me.
I have 100lbs I want lose. What is your experience with this surgery? Anyone go from lap band to DS?
I don't know about the revision from lap band to DS. The DS will probably offer you the best opportunity to lose but it will require a complete change in eating habits and mindset. You'll need to follow the high protein diet as well as research the types of supplements you'll need (for the rest of your life). Because of the malabsorption with the DS dry ADEK vitamins are necessary.
I had my DS 18+ years ago. I've lost all my excess weight and have kept it all. But I take lots of vitamins and supplements, get full labs done once a year, have a great primary doctor who is helping me with everything, and unfortunately deal with several issues that are directly related to the DS - I constantly battle iron deficiency anemia and I'm also being treated for osteoporosis. Not everyone will experience this (or other things) but it's something that can happen.
With all of this I wouldn't change a thing. For me personally it was the absolute right choice.
It's a great surgery but requires dedication.

I recently, 4 wks., had my lap band removed due to slippage and hiatal hernia. I'm terrified of gaining back the 100+ pounds I lost over the 10 years I had the band. I've gained 35 in the last 4 years. We moved away from family and friends, the kids are grown, I drink too much and snack too much. My doc says I have to heal the damage that was done by the band for at least 6 months. On the brighter side, I feel a hundred percent better. I was really suffering with the band. It's so nice to be able to sleep lying down and eat garlic and spicy foods again. I definitely have an addictive personality. It runs in the family. So I'm pretty sure I want to have another procedure. And I'm not sure what to do. So if anybody could give me some pluses to the procedure they had, besides the Lap-Band,let me know. Thanks all.
im a lap band to DS. I had the lap band for 10 years revised to ds 11 years ago. I had to wait 6 monhts for my esophagus to heal, i have irreversible damage. I dont want to scare you, but you will probably gain fast post lap band removal....we are used to being restricted, when that is gone.....it is difficult not to eat...my lab work now is much better than post lap band....
I decided at the time the DS was the best for me long term, etc.
If you have a specific question for me, PM me or I will not see it, as I don't check responses on the forums and don't have anything forwarded to my email.
Thanks for the reply. I'm doing well I haven't gained any more weight I'm sticking where I'm at. I've been recording what I eat which helps me keep track of calories excetera been using the Obesity help food log. How are you doing otherwise. I had a lot of damage to and my surgeon said I need at least six months to heal.
