Septic Systems

I recently moved into a house with a septic system. In our "orientation," we were told to not put oils down the drain. During our first inspection a couple of months later, the septic guy told me we were putting a lot of oil down the drain. This isn't the case: we throw all oils/fats away. My concern is that, due to the surgery, my waste is often oily and floats in the water. I know that oils float on top of the water in the tank. What can be done? Am I going to have to flush the system much more frequently? Do I have any options? My search on the internet has not been successful.

Do what I do and blame your wife, but don't tell her about it.
The problem is non digested fat coming out of you. Not many options, and it really won't be a big deal for your septic. The guy who pumps the tank will notice but that's it.

yep...welcome to the DS. You will have to pump more often, and they will think you have been putting a restaurant amount of grease in there!!!

If you have a specific question for me, PM me or I will not see it, as I don't check responses on the forums and don't have anything forwarded to my email.

I realize this is a serious and honest topic but... :):):):)

I did some googling and see that there is something for septic tanks called Oil Sponge. It does not seem to say how much you would need, but I suggest you contact them and see if this is a good solution for you.

I find it incredibly hard to imagine the relatively minuscule amount of oils you're "depositing" into the toilet could impact a septic system. I mean, come on, give me a break.. If you just using the bathroom is causing a problem, DS or no DS, that is a wholly inadequate sewage solution and that would be the real problem, not your restroom use. You'd be putting far more grease just washing the the dishes or running a load through your dishwasher.

In any event, this isn't an issue until there's a problem with the septic system, so until then, if it were me, I wouldn't give it another thought. Not much you can really do about it anyway.
