Yes, you definitely do not need the DS with a BMI of 30. It's the "big guns" of WLS.

Try diet and exercise...there is a forum on this site for Weight Loss without surgery.

If I was in your position, I might want to put on the 8-10lbs to bring my BMI up to 35. The DS has a 98% cure rate for diabetes. Losing weight will just resolve it for a time.

I know some folks when they were going for their weigh-in for RNY at Kaiser would add a couple of rolls of quarters to push them up to 40 or 45 BMI. Plus, Kaiser made you lose 10% before they would do surgery.
