2 week liquid diet pre-op is bs

So I need to vent. I'm having my revision vsg to ds in less than two weeks and I'm required by this new program to follow a 2 week liquid diet pre op. My last program I had to eat less than 1,000 calories, less than 30gm carbs and high protein for two weeks. The day before I was to do non-red liquids. I lost 20 lbs in two weeks.

Now, I'm a RN. What I have been told by my new program is this particular brand of protein shakes they want you to use is modified specifically to shrink your liver. BS. Any low calorie, low fat, high protein diet will shrink your liver. I had to sit through an information session a few days ago about all the things I have to do otherwise it was implied that I would fail at my surgery. BS.

Now I am sticking to a low calorie, low carb, high protein diet and it's just as miserable as I remember it. I am doing 98% protein shakes and water that taste better but do closely mimic the ones I was forced to buy. I followed my vsg instructions to the letter and "failed" by gaining back all of my 114lb weight over 8 years. I simply just had the wrong surgery. So I don't know if it's because I've been through this process before, if I've seen too much in hospitals as a nurse, or if I'm just older. I just can't stomach bs anymore, and more importantly, I know my body much better now than I ever did. I am no longer relying on the experts to tell me what is right and what is wrong.

You're right. It's BS. He's not the only surgeon who does this. IMHO it's just another income stream and has nothing to do with your welfare.

My surgeon required a clear liquid diet for one day pre-op, and of course nothing by mouth from midnight the night before. That was it. He's a very experienced DS surgeon who has published on the DS and does it all the time. And guess what - everything went just fine and my DS was very successful.

You are right. You had an operation that wasn't right for you. That's why your VSG failed, not because of anything you did or didn't do before or after.

You are right. It's BS and even the ASMBS says so. But it's another income stream for the surgeon. Pimping shakes and bad vitamins is just part of the deal. Once upon a time, you could trust your doc to do what was in your best interest. Now, not so much!

But the idea is play their game and get the surgery done. Just nod and agree.
