Hey Major Ma!

where do you get your heme iron? How much do you take? Why do you take this and iron? I only ask because my ferritin is very low.

Hi Rhonda. I take Proferrin heme iron and I usually get it through Amazon.com. Vitalady may still carry it but her inventory has been running iffy since several of her suppliers have changed owners and such. Anyway, you can also get Proferrin from their own web site and Amazon.

When I was working on bringing my levels up I was taking 360 mg of carbonyl iron from Vitalady, but I understand she hasn't found a new supplier yet. You can probably find it at the Bariatric Advantage web site. I'd take the carbonyl iron in the afternoons away from all other vitamins, minerals, dairy, caffeine, wheat and other grains. At bedtime, I'd take 2 Proferrin. It took me a year to bring all the iron markers up to the top of the ranges. I've heard if your ferritin gets too low you have to get an infusion because oral iron just can't do the job.

In recent years my ferritin actually got a little too high and my doc wanted me to stop the carbonyl iron until it comes down. I plan to start the carbonyl iron soon but not nearly as much as I was taking to bring it up initially.

Almost forgot...when you start taking that much carbonyl iron you need to work up to that amount. Start the first week with 1 - 60 mg tablet or capsule a day, add a 2nd the second week, and 3d the third week, et****il you work up to the full dose. Otherwise, it can make you nauseous to take that much too quickly.
