Type of iron and dosage for declining iron

What type, brand and dosage iron do you take daily to increase your iron levels and have you had much success?

I used 300mg of carbonyl iron that I took in the mid to late afternoon away from all the things that interfere with iron absorption and then took another 2 tablets of heme iron at bedtime. It took about a year to bring all my iron markers up. Now, my ferritin can actually run a little bit high, so I only take 1 heme iron tablet a day. I got them both from Vitalady.com but I understand she may have her carbonyl iron, a.k.a. Tender iron, on backorder.  You can order Proferrin ES online but you may have to search for the carbonyl. Vitalady's come in 60mg capsules.

I take 650mg ferrous sulfate (generic) at the end of the day with a chewable vitamin c. I always take this at least two hours after my last calcium dose. 

Do you take your iron with vitamin C? Might want to add it. 

I had low iron and had to get some IV infusion. After that I upped to the 650 (was at 325) and i've been able to keep my levels "normal". 

Just to follow up on this you need to undestand the difference between the answers from KP and Major Mom. With carbonyl iron the ratio of elemental iron is one for one so 300mg is 300mg of elemental iron. With other types on non-heme iron like ferrous sulfate it is usually about 60mg of elemental iron for 325mg of ferrous sulfate. I take 325mg ferrous sulfate a day which is about 60mg elemental iron. I usually alternate between Feosol and carbonyl that I got from Vitalady a long time back.

I take Proferrin, available at proferrin.com and Amazon. I am more than 10 years out from my DS. I was always borderline with the other iron I took, but since switching to Proferrin almost two years ago, my numbers have improved. I take two doses per day.
