Trying to turn it around

Well I am trying to turn this undesired weight loss around eating and drinking 200g of protein a day. Eating more good foods. I was told by one doctor I might need a pancreatic enzyme, and possibly an antibiotic, 50000 IU Vit D from Vitalady. I was taking 50000 a day in an oil form but since we don't absorb oil dry is better I guess. Get a stool sample and check for bacterial growth. One person tells me one thing and another something else same with doctors. All I know something needs to happen. I am down to 140 from 174 in January 14 years since BPD-DS. It's tough to eat that much protein even with 48g per shake. I am full right now and need to eat dinner.

The name of the enzymes is Creon.  They will help you absorb more of what you eat.  May be a good idea.

I would talk to the Doctor about the Creon. I'm not sure what the vit D would have to do with it but yes dry is better.

Is there some reason you are focusing on more protein as opposed to a little less protein and some more carby things
like potatoes w/gravy or butter? Are you having Dh issues when you eat other than protein? If that is the case you might want
to ask the Doc about a dose of Flagyl to kill off the gut bacteria and then a good probiotic to build them back up.

It is frustrating because there is no one answer and really all people can do is offer their best ideas and hope something helps.
I hope something helps,

Pete

You really need to understand, and your doctors need to understand, that the operation you had was NOT the BPD-DS (better known just as DS, but the same thing). Your surgeon did a non-standard of care operation that he called the "mini DS" which was NOT the DS and was not mini at all. Instead of bypassing part of your small intestines, he REMOVED about half of them. If you do not already have your operative report, GET IT. And if it turns out that I'm wrong I will humbling admit my error and apologize. But he was famous, or rather infamous, for doing this operation that no one else did and that has never been accepted by the rest of the bariatric surgery community.

So no, you will not absorb oil based vitamins. The dry is what you need, and not as a guess, it's definite. And yes, pancreatic enzymes, such as Creon, may be extremely helpful to you to help you to absorb both protein and calories in general. You should also be taking the dry vitamin A and K, as these are also fat soluble and you will not absorb them properly either. Vitalady has these as well.

Get that operative report! Give each of your doctors a copy. It will  help them greatly in directing your care.

I have a feeling of dejavou here.   You have been given some great info. over and over.  If you are losing too much weight and want to put a halt to it Creon will help, you had some type of "DSish" surgery, and I put that very loosely  you should know at 14 years out (ok you should know before you had surgery!!!, but 14 years, really?)  that you CANNOT absorb vit/min that are in oil (fat)-ie the RX VitD2 you were taking.  I don't think bacterial overgrowth would cause the issues you have, you are way beyond that, not saying you don't have that, but your problems are much worse.  Welcome to the sucky world of DS and most Drs are ignorant of what the hell that is (and who know what surgery you actually had??) you life really is in your hands, it is part DRs help but YOU must be your own advocate, if something doesn't sound right, research it, fire some drs, I have fired plenty for being stupid, you don't mess with my life.  Ask questions here, BUT do something about it, don't pick the easy way out, this is your health, you life.   have you done any of the things that were posted the last time you posted? your operative reports so your drs know what the heck they are dealing with, etc?   no one can do that for you, you have to care enough about yourself to do it, if you cant physically do what you have to do get some local help.     Tough love here....you really have to listen to the information people have given you....or you wont be around for another birthday.

airbender, I appreciate the tough love.  I remember Pat from many, many years back, and while his cir****tances are dreadful, after I started reading here (just looked in after many years), I went back and started reading some of his posts from other forums going back to 2004/2005.  He knows what the nutritional guidelines are, and what the consequences of failing to meet them are.  On the other hand, my husband is the same age, and seems to clearly not remember things the same way I do!!  Thank god for spreadsheets you can stick to the refrigerator!

I will let you all know I am not counting calories just protein and trying to get the 200g in a day. 3 shakes at  48g each and 3 meals with at least 20g each. My calories seem to vary between 2500 and 3000. If I watch what I eat I can get the protein without being so full I think I am going to explode. I had one of those days yesterday after eating too much carbs bread salad and didn't think I was going to make the bathroom with putting my legs on before I can go. I think I am getting some good advice on another forum and I am trying to comply. I wish I had done something diffferent in 2001 then get this operation. I probably would have had a heart  attack though.

Oh also I do have the operative report and I can't make heads or tales out of it. I cant tell if he remove the intestine or not. I have sent it off to one doc but most of these bariatric guys won'g accept medicarewhich I believe is because they are in it for the money. There is a big market out there for weight loss surgery like chemical dependency and I don't believe these guys would be in it  if it were not for how rich they can make themselves. I am trying to dig myself out of this hole. I think I am possibly putting on a little but won't know that till I check on the docs scale.

Can you copy the operative report HERE? or can you send it to Larra? She can make heads AND tails of it if anyone can.
