Hello, I am a new member , waiting on insurance approval.  I am going to have the DS surgery, hopefully in July or Aug 2014.  Talk to me...advice welcomed...what is the probiotics that I see people discussing all about? Tell me about the 1st week after surg, how soon will I want to get back to work??? Oh many questions, I can't think of now of course.

Congratulations I think the DS is a great decision.

For me the first week was the toughest physically. I made livberal use of the pain meds in the hospital and then cut back when I went home.
Getting back to work depends on your job and how well
you recover. There are some people that went back to an desk job after 2 weeks. At that point I was still
nodding off in the afternoon - I couldn't really have put in a full day. Better by 3 weeks.

Probiotics - many people feel this helps their digestion and gas issues. I wouldn't worry about that for the first month - you probably won't be able to tell any difference. I spent the first 9 months with no probiotic - just eating yogurt with active cultures. I'm still not sold that the ones I am taking are making any difference but many people swear by them. THis won't be the lat time you see YMMV - which stands for Your Mileage May Vary. People can be different about what is really helpful post-op.

You have time - a million questions will come up between now and your surgery. If your anything like me you will need to ask many of the same questions post-op. It's hard to remember stuff when so much is going on. Just ask....

Hi there.  Congrats on making the decision to have your very own DS.  It's a lifetime commitment, and in my eyes,so well worth it.

if you haven't already, go to dsfacts.com.  There is great material and resources for a newbie. I also remember reading every single post on this board for months on end.

Welcome.

Yep, I agree with Pete in that you're not gonna need probiotics early out, live (Greek) yogurt will most likely suffice.  BTW I say Greek yogurt as it has double the protein of standard yogurt.

Primal Defense Ultra, available from Amazon amongst other places, seems to be a widely used probiotic amongst US DSers.
