Hospital meals - not a healthy DS lifestyle

I recently spent 2.5 days in the hospital for an abscess. Everything went well but I was amazed at how hard it
was to get hi protein meals. For me it was impossible in the time I had but it just wasn't one of the things people
were prepared to act on. Luckily I only had one days worth of regular hospital meals - carb heaven.

Anyone else have some experience to share for when I might have a longer stay?

That was the problem with only being in a couple of days. By the time dietary got to me with a menu to choose from
I was headed home so I didn't push on the choices. I didn't think to ask about doubling the meat part of the entrees.

Something to keep in mind for the future though.

I suspect I'm about to have the same problem. I'm about to have 2 back to back (no pun intended) spinal surgeries.

At my pre-op appointment I repeatedly asked that my records be documented to show my need for for extremely high protein, low carb meals. They told me their documentation/communication system didn't include the dietary department. It was suggested that as soon as I am able, to request to speak to a dietician and make my needs known.

Quite frankly, I'm not expecting much so I have a carry-on full of protein bars and powder (& my supplements)...between the hospital and rehab facility, I'll likely be away from home for about 3 weeks.

I think you are on the right track to pack protein bars and powder as a way to supplement.

Back last Oct, I had spinal surgery...as SOON as I was in my room, I asked for the dietician...and explained that I required protein and fat AND extra snacks. Using the term "medically induced short gut syndrome" seems to get medical/health care people to understand what we need. They may look at you like a deer in headlights if you say the DS but the short gut syndrome seems to work. I had plenty of meat, extra snacks, and plenty of fat while I was in. AND it started with the first meal I got after I got to my room.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. That's what I'll do.

Let your doc know so they can give orders for a high protein meal for you.  I suffered the same thing during a hernia repair, and I had them come back from the fridge with yogurt and sliced cheese, then my doc kicked in for the next meal.

I was JUST thinking about this this morning!!  I'm going in for my second round of plastics on July 3rd so I will be in the hospital overnight.  Not only do I follow DS but I am also training for a bodybuilding competition and keep a really strict diet anyway.  I decided just to bring my own food when I'm there.  I will have my packs of Tuna, my almonds and protein shakes/shakers.  If I just take care of it myself and bring it then I don't have to worry about what they bring be...WHEN they can be bothered to finally bring it and what the food is being made with.

You're right. If you can plan ahead better to take some of your own stuff. Even if you can get them to do the
right kind of meals it certainly won't happen on day 1. Congrats on the plastics. :)
