So at 6 months I had my blood work done and was told to take 10,000 units of vitamin A, some additional vitamin D, and daily folic acid.

i just did a recheck and my vitamin d is down to 24, so they prescribed a weekly heavy dose.

my vitamin a is up to 33, so they want me to take an additional 10000 units a day.

folic acid is good.

normal stuff I assume?

Pretty typical if you aren't on dry forms of vitamins such as Vitalady's or BioTech. If they are prescribing oil based gel caps for D, its not much good, even for normies, as it turns out. IF you're taking beta carotene instead of dry vitamin A (palmitate) that won't work well either. I don't know what you're taking specifically but other folks reading this may also want to take a good look at the labels of the vitamins they're using. Typical amounts of dry vitamin D3 for a DSr is 50,000 IUs a day or more to bring up low levels. Typical amounts of dry vitamin A (palmitate) is 25,000 - 100,000 IUs a day. Folic acid dose 1,200 in sublingual form.

We can't absorb gelcaps, you need the dry tablets majormom mentioned.

You need the dry stuff.  Not gelcaps.  Gelcaps are fat based and you do not absorb fat.  Get your A, D3, K2, and magnesium.

You should think about asking your doctor if you should start on the vitalady vitamin plan. My first year labs were terrible!!! I kept going down. I started her plan and my labs turned around ...and have been pretty good ever since.

If your A is going up that's good and the Docs will be happy with the trend.

D is a problem like the other posts were commenting. You can get dry D either from vitalady or biotech via their website or amazon.

It seems harder to get D up than some of the others. Here is how it worked for me. I was taking about 10k vit D daily post-op. Looking at everything I decided to shoot for a level in the upper 60's although many people say it should be quite a bit higher. At 3 months I was at 32 on a scale of 30-100. I decided to do 50k daily. At 6 months I was at 36.1. I then went to 100k (2 50k per day). I just got my 12 month labs and I am at 49.7 so I am making progress but I would have never thought I needed that much D to get the needle moving even though I know there are some people that take more than I do. I figure I will stay at 100k for the next 6 months and then cut back depending on my next set of labs. If I get anything done at 15 months then I will get D included but they usually don't do labs then unless you were showing a problem at 12 months.

Your labs are your guide. If you decide to stay with the gel caps get retested at 9 months, Talk to your Doc/Nutritionist about gel caps vs a dry formulation. It's pretty clear from the vets experience that the gel caps rarely (if ever) give you the boost you are looking for. The gel caps and teh fat malabsorption just make it hard.
