DS Lab Rats: Question about these tests
These tests are usually used in the diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, a bone marrow/blood cancer. My dad died from it in 1990, but from reading about them it seems they might be useful for us. It seems I've seen something similar on my lab reports, without the immunoelectrophoresis. I may be way off, so anyone with a medical background, or knowledge, chime in! I was wondering specifically about the Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) and the Urine protein electrophoresis (UPEP).
- Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) and immunoelectrophoresis (IFE)
- Urine protein electrophoresis (UPEP) and urinary immunoelectrophoresis (UFE)
Thanks in advance!
Way over my head but I'm not medical. I hope someone who knows about these labs will chime in. Good luck!

Serum protein electrophoresis measures protein in the blood includes like HDL, iron, antibodies and hemoglobin.and Immunoelectrophoresis are both tests that measure proteins in the blood, if they are abnormal it is a sign there is cancer.
My guess would be that the Urine protein electrophoresis probably measures protein in the urine.
Also I think immunoelectrophoresis has something to do if things are abnormal it may indicate cancer.
Not much but a bit of info.
