Diet and long trip

The bagel is alarming to me.  That makes me wonder if he isn't going carb-crazy?  Carbs will make your bowels very unpredictable after the Duodenal Switch.  The 3,000 calories a day isn't alarming at all, IF he is eating most of those calories from fat laden protein, that is.  If he's eating carbs (simple carbs like flour and sugar) with wild abandon (cake and bagels) he's going to have potty emergencies.

When I'm going to be around other people in a confined area (car, airplane, meeting) I abstain from all flour and my personal flatulence-inducing foods for the prior day.  I also make it a rule to not go anywhere in the AM until I'm done with my morning routine.  I'm not a public pooper, I prefer my home privacy.

Have him pack an emergency kit just in case.  Change of pants, underwear, etc.  If you're worried about an accident, cover your seats.  Be prepared for any event, that way it won't happen.  And make sure he has lots of wet wipes for clean up.

Most of us with the DS who eat responsibly can completely control these issues.  It sounds as if perhaps your father either doesn't want to go on a trip with you, or he really is a carb-olholic, eating out of control.  If he really wants to go on this trip, make sure he abstains from flour for 2 days beforehand, if possible.  But FAT is good for him.

I know he absorbs very little fat.

So are you saying on a normal day he should take in a good amount of fat and very little simple carbs.

Should he have fats the day before the trip?  My concern is if fats don't get absorbed they will go through the system.

Thanks for all the help it is appreciated.

With a person on a normal digestive schedule, eating high fat doesn't mean running to the toilet.  Many of us only go once or twice a day, despite the high fat eating.  It makes things exit easily, but controlled...the next morning.

Bingo, it's the carbs.  Bean dip, rice, taco shells and cake.  Bagels.  Those are all carbs.  The cake is flour (carb) and sugar (carb).  The bagel is flour.  Beans are carbs, so is rice.  Taco shells are corn, but are still carbs.  All those carbs create GAS in a DSer.  Gas makes for unpredictable pooping.

The fat your father is eating is good.  Fatty protein like bacon, sausage, peanut butter, butter drenched crab, shrimp scampi, those are all EXCELLENT food choices now for him.  But the bagel, cake, taco shells, beans, not so much.  Those are more for occasional eating, not daily.  He should avoid those foods before your trip.

Also, don't forget he needs to take all his vitamins and calcium on the trip.

If he's not taking calcium, THAT could bite him in the butt.  Calcium can slow down the bathroom going as well.  He's supposed to be getting 4 doses of 500 mg of calcium a day, for a total of 2,000 mg. daily.  Is he taking vitamins?

Thanks.  I will give him all the great feedback.

I know he is taking his vitamins and his blood is coming out great.  I believe he is taking calcium carbonate.  I thought it was suppose to be calcium citrate.

You thought correctly.  Calcium Citrate is what he is supposed to be taking.  It's absorbed much easier.
