Hi everyone.  My husband, (280 lbs and hasn’t had any bariatric surgery) has told me he would like to have some vegetarian meals and maybe only eat meat once a week for health reasons.  I can't see me getting enough protein on veggie days, am I destined to making separate meals for us?  Went into Myfitnesspal and 200g tofu has 16 grams of protein as opposed to 200g chicken which has 42g.  he has high cholesterol so I would like to support him but after DS I need my meat!!!!  Thanks everyone.

maybe on your vegetarian days just make sure you get enough protein in with protein shakes instead of the meat... In the end youll figure it out, the way you did things in the past and the way you do them now will change, its just the way it is. I love it that now Im the light eater of the family. I would have never imagined that happening in a million years....lol

My surgeon refused to do the DS on me if I was a vegetarian. And I believe that I have only read about one other DSer who was a vegetarian, and she was struggling.

You can always make vegetarian dishes with meat on the side (for example, make a nice big vegetable stirfry, and cook some chicken to throw in for you, but not for him). Same with omlettes, soups, etc.

Really, though, I would question your husband's desire to eat more vegetarian meals. I think its the breads and pastas that are the real killers, not the meat.

Before I had my DS, I was a lacto-ovo (milk products and eggs) vegetarian.

When I went to the DS seminar, i asked about continuing that food plan.

I was told point-blank that the surgery requires more protein than I could get with that eating style, and if I could not change, then I needed to reconsider having the DS, and possibly look at the RNY or another type of surgery. VSG's were not a valid option at the time, as the surgeon didn't do them as a stand-alone procedure.

I am once again a carnivore!

I think the center is now doing VSG's as a stand alone procedure, but their focus is heavily RNY.

My suggestion...he can cook his own meals...tell him for YOUR health reasons, you must have animal protein.IF HE wants to eat vegetarian meals, let him but share the cooking...he cooks his, you cook yours.

You can enjoy veggies, but cook yourself a serving of meat to enjoy with them.

Here's a novel approach, educate him on the facts. Maybe he genuinely thinks that will help him whereas we all know the carbs etc are the hidden culprits and perhaps he will then see the increased protien  solution.

I don't see what the big deal is, just make yourself some protein- fish is very fast, so is beef, or you can make a stewed meat that will last for days.
