Fat and the DS
This may be a dumb question, but I really was wondering... I know that with the DS surgery, most vets recommend to eat food with more fat (whipping cream in protein coffee, butter to moisten meats, etc.). Does this still negatively affect the arteries and heart like it would with a normal person? Or does the malabsorption of the DS make it where these fats won't clog our arteries and put us in risk?
Thanks so much :)
Yeahhhh. I wouldn't call everyones diet exactly high fat. It is true with the malabsorption that most peoples cholesterol numbers are great and you can eat more than you would have pre-op. Keep the malabsorption in mind when figuring out how much fat you eat. Some of it depends on its effect it has on your bowels - too much and you just end up with DH.
I don't go out of my way to eat high fat. I actively avoid all low-fat foods and I try to be on the heavy side while cooking with butter and adding sour cream after the fact. You have to do some experimenting with just how much fat agrees with you. Not everyone goes out of their way for heavy whipping cream in the coffee, although it is a good perk if you like that. and of course there is the plus of not being concerned about the fat in bacon.
I live in a hotel through the week for work, and nothing amuses me more than a man with three pieces of melon and a tiny smidgeon of eggs and one strip of bacon look at my plate with a mound of eggs covered with cheese and around 8 slices of bacon. Sometimes I'll rub it in and mention that despite all of this, my last cholesterol check was only 120.
