On February 25th, 2009 my life changed in a way I never dreamed it would...I got my Duodenal Switch, which I have nicknamed "The Freight Train".

As of today, I have maintained a 222 pound weight loss.

I have had some bumps in the road, but all in all..it has been a fantastic ride!

Staying hydrated right now is your priority - protein and vites as tolerated.  When I was newly switched, my stomach capacity was 2.8 ounces.  I can now comfortably hold 8 -10 ounces, depending on the density of the food.

Don't worrry about stretching you stomach beyond restriction.  The DS is designed to stretch to its final size during the first year, which is called sleeve maturation.  Your body also has to get used to the new configuration, so you have a lot of adjusting to do.

Wait until your surgeon clears you for solids before you start doing more dense foods, like meat.  You still need time to heal.  That said, moist fish, scrambled eggs and other soft *very moist* foods should sit well.

Some people continue to use shakes as a source of protein supplement.  I do, because I have a runaway "Freight Train" of a DS.  Let your labs guide you as to whether you still do them.  Personally I think they're good insurance against protein calorie malnutrition, and I get a sweet treat that's not empty calories.  I buy unflavored whey protein isolate (better tolerated because of lactose intolerance), extracts, whole milk and heavy cream for my shakes.

Once you're cleared for solids (really, from then till forever!) the nutrition intake rule is: Protein first, fluids next, complex carbs last, if you have room.  We DSer's are prone to be deficient  in vitamins A, D, E K1 and K2.  These are fat soluble vitamins.  Since DSer's only absorb about 20% of all dietary fat, taking oil filled or softgel capsules do nothing for us.  We must get these vitamins in, at high levels, and they must be in dry form.

They are available, but you will likely have to order them online.

I love Michelle aka Vitalady...and for immediate post op, I ordered her DS package.  It lasted about three months, as it takes time to be able to get all the vitamins in.  I think that's even about average for once you have the dosing schedule down.  I had to find less expensive sources, due to a cash flow problem - especially for the ADEK's, so I order from Amazon, Lucky Vitamin,Swanson's even eBay!  I still get a few items from Vitalady, but cherry-picking for the best price on the specialty ultra-high potency vites, and ordering protein powder by the 10# bag   has managed to save me about 350-400 dollars annually on nutrition supplies.  Also, keep an eye out for BOGO  sales - that's the best time to stock up!  I also keep an eye out for coupons as well, especially for probiotics!

Congratulations on having "Platinum Standard" in the fight against morbid obesity.
