Thyroid Trouble
A few months ago I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease - an autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). I had some terrible symptoms and was miserable while I sought treatment. After a lot of tests I started taking a medication to control the hormone production of my thyroid. Now, after only a couple of months my thyroid has gone the other way, and I'm now hypothryoid (underactive thyroid). I'm gaining weight back at an alarming rate. I have an appointment with my endocrinologist to see about changing treatment, but in the meantime I wondered if any of you have had similar experiences. I hate to be losing ground after a year of progress. This really stinks!!

I don't have graves, just an underactive thyroid. I have been struggleing with my medication since the ds (my levels were being kept at .89 pre-op and I felt good, on the same meds i'm at 4.1 now and my eyes close while doing daily chores).
I know how hard it can be, and gaining weight/not losing because of my thyroid is one of my fears.
How is your diet these days?
I'm trying to go back to the strictest low carb diet I can stand to help make up for the crappy metabolism issues.

Lots of fun isn't it? I remember I used to bbq lots of chicken brest/turkey breast and chipolatas and make sweet potato fry poutines when I *really* wanted junk food. I also made home made ice cream with no added sugars (or sweeteners) which was good for getting me through 35c weather.
Not an ideal diet for sure, but I lost and kept weight off on it. (I had a as many veggies as you want rule back then (except peas/corn/potatos)).
welcome to the fun world of hypothyroidism....most people dont know that the thyroid control metabolism....in 2011 I had a thyroidectomy, and have been hypo ever since, that with the DS is a difficult mix. whenever you are on thyroid medication AND you have the ds it is always more difficult, endos freak out on how much they have to give a malabsorption patient. as a hypo it is very very difficult not to gain weight...very hard...I understand
