Cholesterol Getting Higher??
I know DS patients typically have very low cholesterol levels. I was 216 (total) before surgery & then dropped to 133 right afterwards & maintained that for 6 months. At my 9-month labs they went up to 147 and now at 12-month labs they are up to 180....YIKES!! I have not been going crazy on the fats...maybe between 100-130 grams a day, but have increased my egg & seafood/beef intake.....chicken is getting boring!!! Could this be increasing my cholesterol levels? I know my common channel is a longer than most (150 cm), but I should still be malabsorbing a majority of fats/lipids...right? I was on a creme brulee kick during the holidays...maybe this increased my levels when I had my blood drawn? Have your cholesterol levels trended up like this? Do they normally go up over time? Should I decrease my fats & intake of eggs/beef/seafood?
Some people have high cholesterol because of genetics and the DS won't fix it. Does high cholesterol run in your family? If this is the case, take the meds because you can't fix the problem with diet and or exercise. 180 is your total cholesterol. What is your HDL, LDL, and triglycerides? Is your good cholesterol high?
I wouldn't run too fast to make changes! Have it tested again in a couple months. So much of your gut is bypassed that the only way you can develop high cholesterol is if it is genetic!
Thanks for the response. This one has me perplexed as high cholesterol does not run in my family and my levels were really never high enough for my PCP to put me on medication. Below is a breakdown of my cholesterol components along with my triglycerides for each of my 3, 6, 9, & 12-month labs. I am going to start to watch the cholesterol that I consume & request to get this re-tested in 3 months to see if it is what I am eating. If it is still trending up then I'll have my answer. I am just a little bummed because I liked the fact I could eat alot of eggs, bacon, & butter & thought I did not need to be concerned about this.....
Triglycerides 80 79 95 91
HDL 43 57 53 61
LDL 74 58 75 101
