Nausea. It sucks.

So, I'm ranting again (sorry).  I've been sick with the flu and my stomach turned a little at the thought of food before getting sick, but now it turns before/during/after.

I'm taking my ant-acids, I'm 5 weeks post op.  Trying to force food in me, but now even drinking makes me nauseous.

My google results have not confirmed or denied this as normal.

Help?

I was 8 months out on the fourteenth of this month and I still get nauseous often. Usually after three to four bites of protein. That's just the way it has been for me. I really depend on the protein shakes, and yogart to get my protein in. Everyone is really different on this one. It usually gets easier the father you are out, I am the accception. It is still so early for you, I wouldn't worry about it. One day at a time.... Even now if I don'****ch my liquid intake , and don't get enough in the dehydration will make it worse.... so stay on top of your fluids.

Susan, sorry you are feeling badly, but take heart in knowing that there are tons of normies out there that are also nauseous with the flu.

I was nauseous for a good 3 months after my DS.  Seemed like forever, but from reading others stories on this board, I knew to keep the faith.  Things that helped were ginger and peppermint stuff.  And Dr G had me on Prilosec twice a day.

You mentioned that even drinking is hard, but boy, if you get dehydrated you will go down hill fast and land up back in the hospital.  So keep sipping on some Ginger tea and tell yourself that this too will pass.  Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks you two.

I know, it could be made worse by the flu, but I also know it was there before.  This thing is just knocking me on my backside rather badly.  I'm trying to keep the drinks going even if i'm nauseous.  some mint tea with milk actually sounds okay so I might try that.

I'm mostly angry because I was finally *just* hitting the 60g protein+70OZ fluid+ vitamins, and now i'm getting the fluid in, and vitamins (mostly) but the protein has been shot to hell.

I could only just tolerate the coffee with protein powder, and now the thought is making me gag.  I choked down the greek yogurt yesterday, and I tried twice at egg today and finally got one in me but I know how far away that is from what I should be doing.  I know it's just being sick, I know I will eventually get better, and eventually start getting it all in again, just finding it hard to dig deep right now.

I think I might make some protein brownies tomorrow,  hopefully they won't taste completely noxious and I'll be able to get one down. :)

So sorry to hear you are struggling with this. I am 2.5 months out and still get nauseous a little here and there... I notice it gets worse when I do not get protein in. I handle meat the best when nauseous. For some reason eating several bites of chicken or steak makes the difference. I know you are not as far out and that may not be possible BUT hopefully it will improve with time when your selection gets better...

Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon

I had a bad experience with protein powder at two months out. I had a heckuva time getting back on track for about two weeks after. I stopped focusing on weight loss and tried to focus on eating again. I ate oatmeal (I did add some protein powder) and enjoyed bananas. Neither were good food choices at two months out, but I had to do something to move forward, or risk falling back.

Once I felt better, I dropped the oatmeal and bananas.

I might add, I also ate cheese, yogurt, and cottage cheese during that time.

Do what you must to get over this small hurdle. You will feel better and will get back on track!

I know it's really bad, but not eating for a week seemed to lose some pounds really fast.

My fridge is overflowing with cheeses (cheddar, goat, cottage, brie, etc), yogurts (greek and non), chicken, have some pre-cooked bacon in the freezer, home made veal patties in the freezer.

It's that the idea of putting any of it in my mouth makes me physically ill.  I ordered a greek pita today (chicken), ended up picking the chicken out and forcing it in.  It smells amazing but it was just so hard to swallow it.

Between age 13-21 I struggled a lot with a starvation/binging cycle (no food 6 days, eat all in sight 1 day).  I gained a lot of weight and it took me years to get my act together and force myself to eat normal well balanced meals along with 2-3 tiny healthy snacks (with my children).  I started changing before getting pregnant with my first child because I never wanted my children to see that sort of unhealthy behavior, but this last week and a half is dredging up the feelings I thought I left behind.

I don't think this is a mental issue, but it is helping bring all the memories back, which makes getting over the physical significantly harder.

Last week I caved and just ate a couple baked french fries with the muchkins in order to get *any* food down.  The carbs are going down more easily than the protein is.

I'm going to try to drink my protein tomorrow, I think the flu is improved enough for me to be ok with forcing the god awful stuff down.

I'm sorry you went through so many struggles when you were younger. I haven't myself, so if I oversimplify what I am about to say, forgive me.

I assume your starvation/bingeing had something to do with insecurities with your weight.

Celebrate that you have reversed that pattern and are teaching your children good eating habits!

If you in any way believe that what you put in your mouth might make you fat, throw those thoughts away! I have never seen the DS NOT work. Your anatomy has changed and you will lose weight. Period. Regain can happen at say, 5+ years out, but don't even think about that. Eat freely because you won't gain the weight; eat responsibly (protein first, then low carb, vitamins a must), for your health.

Lastly, beauty is found on the inside, and not on the outside (as society likes to dictate). I have found that my happiness comes from trying to do the right things (being honest, respectful, helpful) in my relationships with others. My happiness is not a summation of what others think of me. If your eating disorders had more to do with feelings of low self-worth and those feelings are coming back to the surface, you may need to see a doctor or therapist. Your hormones will be like the devil to you for a while. If you can't get your eating on track, you should probably see a doctor.

Know that you are not alone. We have all experienced the wild ride of hormones that first year after surgery. And while we may not all have had an eating disorder, we have all experienced painful events that manifest into unhealthy eating or drinking habits, or behavior habits. That is true for everyone, not just those you will find here! What separates us all is some have the ability to move forward, and some have difficulty. You have done a wonderful job of moving forward from your youth! You did it! Only you can determine the core of why you are not eating. Be sure to address it and get it under control in whatever manner you need.

Just a couple of other thoughts...

If the thought of protein drinks make you want to be sick, don't take them. You need protein and that can come in food form or liquid form. Some love the protein drinks. And some have never had them. Its a choice! I have never had protein drinks and I am doing great!

At five weeks out, and following the 30/60/90 rule, your target need only be 35 grams. That isn't very much. Don't beat yourself up. You have lots of protein stores going into surgery that your body will use.

I hate to say congratulations on your weight loss, as it came off the very hard way. You will likely gain a little or not lose for a bit if you lost a lot while having the flu (my non DS friend lost 7 lbs with the flu----it all came back a week later). That's the flu talking and not a reason to be concerned with your DS.
