How to eat - DS
I am only two months out BUT I have never been told to count calories or fat.... I only count protein I am for 100... I add fat to things to keep my bowels moving with the amount of vitamins I take.....
My concern with you counting fat and calories is that you will lose less and slower if you do not eat enough.... When I do not eat much I stop losing.... when I Load up on protein and add fat I lose way faster! Also If you are taking a large amount of vitamins I would worry low fat would lead to constipation ...

123 pounds loss in 1 year 7 months!
Went from a size 22 to a size 4/6!
And for those people who count calories and the split between protein, carbs, and fat.....those people are called dieters! Haven't we all been there, done that, and failed?
DS eating is easy. Protein first. Keep carbs low, and enjoy as much fat as your bowels will allow.
Keep in mind your description of "I've been doing good, but have slowed down," sounds pretty normal. You may even stop losing for three weeks and then suddenly drop again.
If you truly think you are sabotaging your efforts, its probably in the carb department. Those carbs can sneak in without one even realizing it.
We see bad nutritional advice from surgeons and even more so from nutritionists all the time. Nutritionists in particular can't wrap their heads around the concept that with the malabsorption of the Ds, fat is not the enemy. You are now absorbing only 20% of the fat you consume. Fat will not hurt you! Carbs will.
Since you also absorb only 40 - 60 % of the protein you consume, it's protein first for life. Whatever fat comes with that protein is just fine. There is no need to eat the low fat or nonfat version of anything, no need to eat only lean cuts of meat (which may be harder to consume early out anyway), no need to eat only a dry chicken breast, the dark meat is good for you, etc etc. Just stay low carb, esp during your weight loss phase, and take all your vitamins and minerals, and you'll do fine.
Speaking of which, did you get proper advice about the vitamins and minerals? Many nutritionists give the same advice to both RNY and DS patients, and our needs are NOT the same at all.

Okay, ditch the ADEKs. You'll do MUCH better to buy those vitamins (A, D, E, and K) separately, as the ADEKs 1) just plain don't have ENOUGH, and 2) don't allow you to adjust your intake of each separately. These are fat-soluble vitamins, so we DSers need to buy 'dry' or 'water miscible' versions of them.
5000 IU of D3 isn't nearly enough for most of us. I take 50,000 IU a day, and some people take 3 or 4 times that much. You do need a good multi-vitamin, Centrum or the equivalent, and you need to take at least two a day---but not at the same time. You also need to spread your calcium CITRATE out into doses of about 600 mgs, taken at least two hours apart.
I am taking 2000 mg of calcium, 28 mg of iron, 5000 iu of D3 and 3 ADEK Multi-vitamin a day. OK gona give it a try and listen to those that have lived it :). So carbs, how low should I shout for, note I do work out for a hour or so at least five times a week.
OK, WOW....not adequate at all. Get rid of the ADEK multi...useless for us. Make sure that calcium is CITRATE. You need ATLEAST 50,000 iu of DRY D3 per day. Get tender/biotech dry D3-50 from vitalady.com or amazon. You will need tender/biotech DRY A-25 as well. Most DSer's take atleast 50,000 iu of DRY A per day which is 2 of the A-25. Tender/biotect dry K1-1000 is another one you'll need. You can get all of these from vitalady or amazon. Just get a regular multi. Lots do the Costco multi, but any regular multi will do.
Carbs....during the weight loss phase I would try to stick to less than 100 daily.

"Think twice.....Cut ONCE"
As someone who is a few years out and has fallen slightly off the wagon, please listen to what everyone is saying. Fat is your friend. Since I have cut my carbs and dramatically increased my fat intake, bacon, butter, mayo, etc., the weight has been falling off me again . Also listen to Ms Batt about the vitamins. A good start is Vitalady's plan and you can adjust from there.
