Constantly Sick at 1 month post-op

I am so sick I just can't believe this is normal.  I am unable to eat or drink anything, I vomit within 30 minutes (not that anything but spit comes up) and it is horrible literally gut wrenching vomiting.  I also have 10-20 pure liquid stools a day.  I have been getting progressively worse and went in to ER last night because nothing was stopping nausea/vomiting and pain. They were finally able to get me under control with IM phenergan and IV dilaudid (even though I am taking pill form of both at home) and gave me 3 bags of fluid via IV. I felt better when I left but now I've been bedridden again all day with the extreme vomiting and constant diarrhea. They told me my lipase was elevated but the CT showed nothing wrong with my pancreas.  I am scheduled to go in to the surgeon tomorrow but I CAN NOT take this anymore.  NO ONE could live like this. I have been unable to live any semblance of a life since my surgery. PLEASE give me some insight as to what I can ask the surgeon to do to fix this. I have posted to some other WLS groups online too but no real answers yet, so if anyone has seen this already please forgive me :)

So sorry you're going through this! No, this is not normal. Did they check for a stricture? I've read that an endoscopy can help.

I found this link to a page in "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" that talks about strictures:

http://books.google.com/books?id=A6bUvDFvvkUC&pg=PA61&lpg=PA 61&dq=stricture+from+duodenal+switch+surgery&source=bl&ots=l zlSu1pJ81&sig=DS7jag0Y2CPRgLQZU-0UOjOqTE8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=z_nE Ut7AL4e72wWmg4CYAw&ved=0CIABEOgBMAc#v=onepage&q=stricture%20 from%20duodenal%20switch%20surgery&f=false

Sorry that I do not have any other answers.

Good luck with your surgeon. Hope you feel better very soon!!

I'm glad you're seeing your surgeon tomorrow! From everything I've heard about him he sounds very conscientious, and I hope he can help you.

the diarrhea could be due to either C diff or bacterial overgrowth from the antibiotics you were given for your surgery. Ask your surgeon about these possibilities. It sounds like you need testing to determine the causes of both the diarrhea and the vomiting so that appropriate treatment can be given. Please let us know what happens tomorrow.

So I am admitted in the hospital to fund out what is going on. My lipase is still increasing and nausea and diarrhea still going on. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of this and I will leave here a new woman.

I am so relieved for you!  It ****** me off when they don't take us seriously reporting problems like this.

Hi Paula,

I had the same symptoms when I was about 1 mo post op for DS.  They found I had a leak and had to repair it.  I eventually had to have a revision to Gastric Bypass.  Please let us know how you are doing.
