Too much Vit-D harmful?

When I last had my labs done (Oct 30, 2012) my vitamin-D3 was 26. I've been taking one (sometimes 2) 50,000iu D pills a day (together with my multi and Calcium). I'm reading right now on WebMD that to much vitamin-D can hurt you, and that worries me. Obviously we malabsorb a lot of it, but... I don't know.... I don't even know what I'm asking/trying to say? I guess my question is -
Is it harmful if I take 1 (sometimes 2) 50,000iu daily? I'll have insurance in January so I can FINALLY get my labs done (thank God!).

Yes it can cause toxicity which can lead to things like liver and kidney problems. At least you don't have long to wait 'til you get your labs done. You should really try and get them done 6 monthly though.

Are you taking Dry D3 or an oil-based D?  It is extremely rare to become toxic on the Dry D.  I took 150,000 ius a day for over a year to get my D levels in an acceptable range and I take 100,000 ius a day to keep them there.  Go by your labs.  A  LOT of DSer's maintain on 100,000 ius per day.  If you are without insurance again, contact me and I will give you a few online sites where you can order your labs done either by Quest or Labcorp for cheap as a self-pay.

Thanks for the reply! I take Dry D (Bio-Tech). I'm waiting to see if I can get on Medicaid, but if my husband "makes too much" then l'll have to get insurance through the marketplace (Obamacare). Either way, it won't be long now! Can't wait!!!!! It sucks having NO idea where your levels are. :/

With dry D3 you should be fine. Toxicity for D is something like 700 on labs and I've never ever seen that in 6 years of watching DSrs' labs as they take up to 200,000 IUs of dry D3 a day. That oil based D2 crap doctors prescribe is the one to worry about. If you're really worried, check out Vitalady's website for the vitamin D self-test. You take your own blood sample and send it off for lab levels.

Amy:  I can tell you what happened to me.  I was trying to raise my D level by taking 150K a day of dry D3.  It wasn't moving for over a year, so I kept on taking it for another 6 months.  I also started laying in a tanning bed 3 times a week for 6 minutes each time.  When I got my D rechecked, it was 348.  I felt great, no "symptoms of toxicity", and my PTH was 12.  I stopped taking D for 3 months, and it came down to a high normal of 150, which is where I purposely keep it currently.

You are only taking one third of what I was taking, so I think you are safe.  However, while you are working to raise ANY lab value, you would be very wise to recheck frequently just that one lab.  Even without insurance, you can certainly afford one lab.  The cost of the dry D3 you will save when you reach your level will offset the cost of the lab.

I repeat:  I had no issues with my D level being 348.  I have heard of one man having a level in the 900's, also with no toxicity issues.

I wouldn't worry, since I believe anything below 30 is low. To get it up to toxic levels, you'd have to be taking much more than you currently are.

No worries.  It is very unusual to hear of a DSer with high D levels.

It is harmful to the average bear, but we are NOT average bears.  It took me 6 months of taking 100,000 iu/day to get my D up to an acceptable.
