Do you think maybe some of their docs are committing insurance fraud by getting it covered calling it the DS?

I would say definitely!

I would hope not but from the sounds of at least one member, it is possible.  She says her surgeon told her this was a DS and it definitely is NOT.

Or alternatively go with a vetted surgeon ;-)

Interesting, as a self pay I was very into the stats for each WLS offered, especially the weight regain issues. I'm sure safer and cheaper would have come in second and third on my consideration list.

Are the ethical issues a potential gray area based on the Doctor's own opinions? As a lay person I would have different reactions to hearing it called experimental vs new with little historical data. If my surgeon called it experimental I would be much less likely to accept it. If he couched the description in terms of new but that he had seen good short term results I would have to give it more serious thought.

Could you elaborate on the selective fat malabsorption issue? Maybe in a different post, I don't want to take this away from the original intent. I understand about the substantial malabsorption but I haven't seen anything else about selectivity. Maybe you can pop in a link to something else about it.

It's good this is out here to help people make more informed decisions but for myself I didn't really appreciate many of the nuances for the different WLS until I was post op. I learned some high lights but that that was all. I'm just happy/lucky I had a surgeon that could discuss the pros and cons of each and not someone that had a particular goal.

Thanks for sharing this. I will do more research on this as I've been considering revision from the VSG but am giving myself some time, as well as doing more research as to the other possible procedures.
