Need some help!

I had the BPD/DS in November and have been struggling with everything.  I at the moment regret ever having this surgery and am very concerned with what the future has in store.  I was hoping to get some advice from those who have gone through this.  I have lost 72lbs but am so sick and weak that I have no energy to do anything.  I have had 2 follow ups with my surgeon and he has been less that useful.

Did you actually have the BPD and not the Sleeve?

Who was your surgeon.

"Everything"? List your most problemmatic issues.

What is your Vite/ Supplement schedule.

Liquid intake?

What are your stools like.

Your protein intake?

Can your GP take over your care?

Ricky, the DS is often called the BPD/DS because it was derived from the BPD, and Dr. Scopinaro was a little touchy about what it was called.(*grin*) The DS really should be called the VSG/DS, because technically the "DS" part only refers to the intestinal portion, and a true Switch can't be done without retaining the pylorus.

Of course you are still struggling. You are still healing. The DS (or BPD/DS as some veteran DS surgeons still call it) is a major surgery. You lost more than half your stomach and rearranged your intestines in such a way that changes the way you process fat, sugar, protein. This is a HUGE surgery. It can take a very long time to recover. This is not unusual. Many people stay out of work from 6-8 weeks after the DS.

Just about everyone goes through moments of regret during the initial healing phase that you are in. "What have I done to myself!!??!!" is entirely normal.

Relax, get in your protein and vitamins, and you will be totally fine.

It really does get much better.

Like Dagny said, your feelings are very typical this early after surgery. A 72 lb weight loss is incredible and the DS is doing what it should be doing. Energy comes from carbs, and when you go low carb, it does effect your energy levels.

You mention you are "sick." You need to define that a little better. The fact that you've seen your surgeon twice already, tells me that there isnt anything serious going on.

It will get better. Every single day. Eat your protein, drink your water, and walk! Best wishes.

It sounds like you're horribly dehydrated (fatigue and nausea major symptoms).  You should be drinking 64oz every day, no matter what.  You may need an IV bag to get a boost of fluids and make your full-time job keeping hydrated.

It is early days but to be truly helpful you should give us some examples of daily protein and liquid totals along with what you are taking so far for vitamins. Also, the exact surgery date would be helpful. Nov 1st would put you at about 8 weeks a vast difference from nov 30th putting you at 3 weeks. Ther are amazing changes all along the first 2 months. OF all the things I mentioned the amount of liquids you are getting in may be the biggest gotcha. Might not be your problem but it catches a lot of people off guard.

I'm 8 months out and the first 4 weeks sucked big time and I had no complications - just the normal healing process.

Feel better soon.

If you'll put your surgery date and type on your profile, it will automatically show up every time you post. This helps us help you.

Can you tell us how much liquid you're drinking EVERY SINGLE DAY? What and how much you're eating? Can you be more specific in what your struggles are? The more we know, the better advice we can give.
