I am having the DS next week which is a revision for me. I have heard people say how painful it is and that revisions dont work as well... Can anyone help me out with whether this is true or not?

I've heard revisions are more difficult for the surgeon and you want to pick one that has had a lot of experience doing them. I've also heard that the pain from a band removal is most painful around the port site. RNY can be a little longer recovery time and requires a lot of delicate work. As far as revisions working, I've seen it both ways, it's very individual. Who will your revision surgeon be?

Wishing you all the very best.

Thanks for your reply Gina...

My surgeon is Dr. Barker of Barker Bariatrics. He is supposed to be one of the best around.I am very nervous because of the pain and going thru all of that not to obtain good results would really be disappointing.

Barker isn't known for RNY to DS revisions but I suppose since Dr Stewart passed away he's been taking on more revision patients of various surgeries. I haven't heard good things about the dietary / nutritional follow-up in his practice. You'd be better served following something like Vitalady's plan post-op. If he has a racket going trying to sell vitamins, stay away from them. They may be fine for RNY, VSG and bands but only a very few docs/dietitians recommend adequate vitamins and protein for DSrs.

Many revision patients do very well with the DS, some don't. A lot depends on what you are revising from and having an experienced DS revision surgeon. The surgeon you have listed is someone I've never heard of, even with many years on this and other DS forums. His page on OH says he does revisions, but doesn't list the DS as an operation he does at all, let alone as  a revision from something else, which can be much more complicated (depending on what you are revising from, which I don't know). Or, perhaps he is the one who did your original surgery, and someone else is doing your revision?

I hope you have done your research and that you are having your surgery with the best possible, most experienced at the DS specifically surgeon. If so, you will probably lose weight more slowly than someone having a virgin DS, but you still have a good chance for success.

I am a revision from the RNY to the DS and I am very pleased so far. I had my surgery in March, am 63 years old and feel I am right on track. I am not a fast loser but I am not slow either- just middle of the road. The surgery is painful but most surgeries are if they are done open. I have lost 90lbs in less than 9 months. My surgeon is not well known to the bariatric world or on their list but he is a civilian Dr who works with the military and has for over 40 years. He is phenomenal . I have been so pleased from start to finish. He will be doing more surgery on me in 6 weeks for a hernia repair. I can't say enough good  things about him. Do your homework~ be your own advocate~ search out others who have had surgery with him and what type of surgery~ go to support groups to see how well others are doing and what they think of him then make your decision. It will be your best guide for the answers to your questions.

Many do well with revisions- they may just lose a little slower than some

Good luc****ep us all posted.

You are going to do great! Last Tuesday, dec. 3rd, I had my band removed and DS performed in one 5 hour surgery with Dr. Kim in collleyvile, Texas. I stayed in the hospital two nights. I was shocked that the pain was not as bad as I expected. I would say its a lot like our lapband recovery was. The nurses will help u stay on top of the pain. Remember when u are allowed to sip water....keep on it and walk as much as they will let u. This surgery is ur tool. Follow the rules and you WILL be successful. You got this!
