Protein Supplement VS. Meal replacement
First things first, my surgery date was moved up by 1 day! I am so ready for this pre surgery jitters to be over. So I have a question and I am going to apologize in advance I have asked several protein related questions but I am still soooo confused. I know there is a difference between meal replacement and protein supplement. I ordered some injury unflavored powder, and 2 containers of Body fortress whey protein isolate, and several samples of synthrax nectar but when I was reading the labels they say protein supplement. I was told by my nut that we can only absorb 25-30 grams of protein in one sitting so adding extra is a waste so can you recommend products that are meal replacers. I live in rural Texas so I will have to order this stuff off the internet and I am cutting it close to receive it pre-op.
Thanks
Delaney
That doesn't sound right to me. A lot of us will do double scoop protein shakes to get a jump on protein with 40-50 grams.
Sorry but I think your NUT is just wrong on this one. Next time you talk you might ask her for some info about where that is from. I've just never heard of a study like that. Kind of goes against everything I have been doing any way.
My labs show my protein levels are still good.
Congrats on one day less of waiting and wondering. You'll do fine.
Pete
It is confusing. I only do a heaping single scoop per shake or protein coffee and try to stay around 30 grams per shake too. I consider that a protein supplement.
If I recall correctly, those folks that were told to do extended pre-op liquid diets were doing meal replacements that might contain more carbs than a 100% whey protein isolate protein powder--something more like a blend of whey protein isolate and milk concentrates of some kind. I prefer to stay low carb and think what you have ordered is perfect. If you want more calories, do double scoops and call it a meal replacement. Whether you absorb the extra protein isn't really the issue, for a meal replacement, the calories are. If you want a good meal replacement pre-op, mix a double scoop shake using part milk and par****er. Once you're post-op, you can still mix your shakes but use cream and water or 1/2 & 1/2.
I hope I haven't confused you more. Stick with the powders you have. If you want a meal replacement either add a 2nd scoop or mix a shake with milk for the carbs and calories.

After seeing the post about other links I was looking at the links. The ASMBS document many posts reference is no longer available at the listed link but it is available here: It is a little rough of a read but this part seems straightforward.

The pertinent quote about no studies is on page 23 of the pdf right under table #6 first column (page 895 is at the top of the page).
The links I saw were posted by user MacMadame. Including this one:
