Protein Supplement VS. Meal replacement

First things first, my surgery date was moved up by 1 day! I am so ready for this pre surgery jitters to be over. So I have a question and I am going to apologize in advance I have asked several protein related questions but I am still soooo confused. I know there is a difference between meal replacement and protein supplement. I ordered some injury unflavored powder, and 2 containers of Body fortress whey protein isolate, and several samples of synthrax nectar but when I was reading the labels they say protein supplement. I was told by my nut that we can only absorb 25-30 grams of protein in one sitting so adding extra is a waste so can you recommend products that are meal replacers. I live in rural Texas so I will have to order this stuff off the internet and I am cutting it close to  receive it pre-op.

Thanks

Delaney

That doesn't sound right to me. A lot of us will do double scoop protein shakes to get a jump on protein with 40-50 grams.

Sorry but  I think your NUT is just wrong on this one. Next time you talk you might ask her for some info about where that is from. I've just never heard of a study like that. Kind of goes against everything I have been doing any way.

My labs show my protein levels are still good.

Congrats on one day less of waiting and wondering. You'll do fine.

It is confusing. I only do a heaping single scoop per shake or protein coffee and try to stay around 30 grams per shake too. I consider that a protein supplement.

If I recall correctly, those folks that were told to do extended pre-op liquid diets were doing meal replacements that might contain more carbs than a 100% whey protein isolate protein powder--something more like a blend of whey protein isolate and milk concentrates of some kind. I prefer to stay low carb and think what you have ordered is perfect. If you want more calories, do double scoops and call it a meal replacement. Whether you absorb the extra protein isn't really the issue, for a meal replacement, the calories are. If you want a good meal replacement pre-op, mix a double scoop shake using part milk and par****er. Once you're post-op, you can still mix your shakes but use cream and water or 1/2 & 1/2.

I hope I haven't confused you more. Stick with the powders you have. If you want a meal replacement either add a 2nd scoop or mix a shake with milk for the carbs and calories.

My NUT said the same thing about protein, and I'm a double scooper myself.  Only once did I have a protein issue, and that was because I wasn't doing what I was supposed to.  It was during a period when a loved one (my Mom) was terminally ill.

I used to double scoop until I heard that same advice on here and it was supposedly from vitalady's site.  I also reduced due to financial issues and 1scoop makes it go further then 2. I will now resume 2, 2, 2 scoops in 2!

The question they don't clarify is if we only absorb 30g, then shouldn't we be getting 60g in so we can absorb 30?  Remember we only keep half the protein we consume.

I am thrilled your NUT said you on only absorb 25-30 grams of protein at one sitting. Ask for a copy of the study! This topic was just posted a couple days ago and a poster provided some links of some protein studies. I'd be really interested in any proven evidence your NUT has. The previous post said it was a myth.

Look at the post "Protein absorption" one page back.

After seeing the post about other links I was looking at the links. The ASMBS document many posts reference is no longer available at the listed link but it is available here: It is a little rough of a read but this part seems straightforward.

The pertinent quote about no studies is on page 23 of the pdf right under table #6 first column (page 895 is at the top of the page).

The links I saw were posted by user MacMadame. Including this one:

Thanks for the link! AND thanks for finding the page number. It saved me a lot of time.

Looks like a good read and I'm bookmarking it. Its almost 11 pm, and I'm just not up to it right now!

Thanks again.
