Lab results
Hi all, I’m just posting my ‘iffy’ results rather than everything. I’ve been referred to an endocrinologist for my high serum alkaline phosphatase – not sure what that’s all about.
Transferrin saturation is 0% - WTH? Plus I have high Transferrin?? I am seeing a haematologist in a couple of weeks and he seems to be OK with the idea of giving me infusions (PCP was really against them, but I fought my corner and got referred).
Serum alkaline phosphatase level 155 (30-130) H
Corrected serum calcium level 2.14 (2.2-2.6) L
Serum iron level 8 umol/L (12-27) L
Transferrin 999g/L (2-3.4) H
Transferrin saturation 0% (20-60) L
PTH is back in range 6.5 (1.6-9.3)
Vit D OK @ 116 but no reference range!!
Zinc results still pending.
I’m a bit baffled, so I appreciate your thoughts and feedback.
TIA

Alkaline phosphatase is a measure of liver function along with ALT and AST. A very high number could indicate that there is a problem with liver function.
Transferrin and transferrin saturation, I believe, is the amount of free iron in the blood. Below is a description:
Transferrin saturations of less than 20% indicate iron deficiency, while transferrin saturations of more than 50% suggest iron overload.
The terms transferrin saturation and iron-binding capacity, saturation, are interchangeable; however, in the last several years, this value is most commonly referred to simply as the transferrin saturation. This also minimizes confusion with another frequently used value, the iron-binding capacity, when determining a patient’s iron status.
The reference range of the transferrin saturation varies by age, as follows:[1]
- Adults: 20%-50%

Yes, I'm working at trying to understand as much as I can too. I like to see my PCP forearmed with good info. I pushed for a hematology referral a couple of months ago and see the hema again just before Christmas, thanks to everyone on here saying to self advocate (I wrote a letter and that got some action). One PCP I saw said my 'iron' labs were "fine"... seriously??
