Premade Shakes...help!

After being denied twice by cigna, I finally got the call today that I'm approved!  My surgery date is 16th!  Yea!

My question is which protein shake premixed and ready to drink was easiest for you to drink?  Not the powder ones I mix myself.  But the ones already mixed and ready to drink!  Wanting some input before I go out and spend my money!

The only one I drink is Premier Protein Drink from Costco. I especially like the vanilla one, but many like the chocolate one as well.

I know it's a lot to buy at once, but Costco guarantees their stuff so if it didn't work out, you can return them for a full refund. Also, may I suggest protein coffee? It's really good....I use the "Now" flavorless whey isolate I get from Amazon. You can't quite taste the powder, but just be sure not to add it in really hot beverage otherwise it tastes grainy (yuck).

Congrats on the approval and good luck!!

I like Premier Protein from Costco -- but it is not whey protein isolate so I switched.

I can also tolerate Costco's Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein. These have the right kind of protein for DSers (20 grams of whey protein isolate): http://www.costco.com/.product.582261.html. This is what I'm drinking currently.

I've tried Isopure from GNC (which is 40g of whey protein isolate) but I HATED the aftertaste.

Those are the only premade shakes that I've tried.

Good luck!

In the beginning, it's important that you drink!  Doesn't really matter what, just drink.  That's your first goal.  After you have that down, start worrying about protein drinks and whatever else you can have.  Hydration first.  And you won't get in all your protein either but don't even worry about it.  Dehydration will land you back in the hospital fast!

Get some gatorade you can water down a bit.  Premade shakes are a good idea but you need MEAL REPLACEMENT, not protein supplements.  Why?  Because the supplements are meant to be drunk in addition to a regular diet.  They do not have potassium and salts necessary for life.  Low carb is fine but the meal replacement thing is critical for anyone living on shakes.

Is boost considered a meal replacement? Are there any other's you can recommend? I'm getting ready to have surgery next week and I have slimfast low carb, pure protein, atkins, boost..been testing flavors. Can we have gatorade with sugar in it initiallY/

Breathe!  You have more than enough stuff.  Regular gatorade diluted with water is just fine.  If it goes down well don't worry about the sugar.

Once you are a couple weeks out and you have the drinking and eating thing down, no more carbs!

Meal replacement shakes will always be labeled as just that.  Slimfast and Atkins are meant to be meal replacement.  Not sure about the others.  I don't think Boost has much protein and I'm thinking quite a bit of sugar.  Immediately post op don't worry about it but down the road you want to read all labels and reject anything that has a lot of carbs.

If you do boost I would use the Glucose Control Boost. Less carbs that the regular.. The protein content is higher than the one they sell as high protein boost.

Glucose Control boost has 16 grams protein and 16 grams carbs.
The high protein boost has 33 grams carbs and 15 grams protein.

I used the glucose control boost until I found a protein powder that I liked. I still use it occasionally if I need something on the go.
