I tried searching for this but couldn't find this exact question.

I've been trying to find a good ready-to-drink I can take with me when I travel. Tried Isopure and hated it.

I tried one Premier Protein and loved the taste. But I know Premier Protein shakes are probably good for other surgeries, but what about the DS? It doesn't have whey protein isolate, but does that mean we don't absorb ANY of the protein? It has 30 grams of protein, how much of it would DSers absorb?

Here are the ingredients:

Water, Premier Protein®  Shake Protein Blend (Milk Protein Concentrate, Calcium Caseinate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Milk Protein Isolate) Cocoa Powder (processed with alkali), Contains 1% or less of the following: High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Inulin, Cellulose Gel and Cellulose Gum, Potassium Citrate, Sodium Hexametaphosphate,  Magnesium Phosphate, DATEM, Salt, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium, Carrageenan,

You will absorb the protein.  Or around 60% of it because of malabsorbtion.  I have it on hand incase I'm desperate.  But then I'm not wild about the taste or the thickeners in it.

It's not a bad source of protein.  It's not the greatest either.  Here is something from my DS library on sources of protein and the quality of those sources.

The Label Decoder
To most guys, the ingredients list of a protein powder might as well be written in Sanskrit. That’s because it often contains several subtypes of whey, casein, egg, and even soy protein. Here’s how to read the label like a chemist.

Concentrate: The cheapest form of most proteins. It contains slightly higher amounts of fat and carbohydrate than more pure versions and can be clumpy and hard to mix by hand; however, it provides the same basic muscle-building benefits. In the case of casein, it’s referred to as “caseinate.”

Isolate: A protein that’s more pure than concentrate—meaning it contains lower amounts of fat and carbohydrate—and is also easier to mix.

Hydrosylate, or hydrolyzed protein: A protein that’s been broken down into smaller fractions than are in a concentrate or isolate, allowing it to be absorbed into your bloodstream more quickly. However, when it comes to casein hydrosylate, this defeats the purpose, since the benefit of casein is that it absorbs slowly.

Micellar casein, or isolated casein peptides: An expensive but easy-to-mix protein composed almost entirely of pure casein, ensuring slow and steady absorption.

Milk protein: An ingredient that has the composition of natural milk protein (roughly 80 percent casein and 20 percent whey).

Egg-white protein: Like whey and casein, an excellent high-quality protein. It’s sometimes called “instantized egg albumin” on the label.

It caused me to feel nauseous and since it didn't have isolate in it, I moved on quickly. For a while I tried a "higher quality" whey protein concentrate (Isagenix) and felt my muscle tone fade quickly, even with my regular weight training. My protein levels were also headed downward. After switching to a pure form of whey protein isolate only, I didn't feel nauseous at all and my protein levels went back up. I now stick with whey protein isolate only, since I had read on body building forums, as well as DS forums that it is the best absorbed and bioavailable. I am experimenting with dairy free right now, so I would like to try some egg white protein too.

Isn't there lactose in those shakes?

I think so -- but I'm lactose intolerant and I have been able to drink it with no problems. (The first time I drank one, I took a Lactaid pill. But I drank one last night and did not have my dairy pills with me. I was still okay.)

So in everyone's opinion, keeping in mind everyone has different tastes, IS the best OTC protein drink you can find in any Walmart, CVS, Walgreens', Sam's, BJ's, etc.?

I drink these every day.  It is the first protein drink I found that I could tolerate.   I also eat the Premier Protein bars.  I generally get 60 of my 100+ grams from these two items.  My labs don't indicate that I am low in my protein intake which was the case BEFORE I added the Premier Protein shakes...

I am interested to read about the muscle tone issue, however.  I am becoming frustrated by my lack of improvement with my weight lifting routines.  so I guess I need to look at this aspect of the type of protein I am using...

If I know the day will be hard to get my protein in, then I'll add in a Premier Protein Shake and Premier protein bar.  I always used to use egg white protein from Optimum as the whey shakes cause too much gas/diarrhea and my guts just can't handle it.  Premier doesn't seem to bother it.  I was lactose intolerant going into my DS and came out lactose and whey intolerant.
