DS Surgery and age

My ds surgery is scheduled for Dec 30,2013 with Dr. Folahan Ayoola from Denton, Tx.  I am 69 years old and have been obese since my early 20's.  Just seem to get heavier each year.  I have had all pre op tests and everything is a go.  I am Type 2 diabetic but otherwise pretty healthy for my age.  Just limited mobility because need to lose 150 to 200 lbs.  My main question is are there other DS vets out there close to my age and how has the surgery affected you?  The Dr.doesn"t seem concerned about my age so I am trying to trust his judgement.  Any and all encourgement would be appreciated.

Over the years I've known of at least 15 people in your age group who had surgery and did just fine.

I was 60 when Ihad my surgery and, within months, I felt 10 years younger-physically. I found that removing fat from my face made me look a little more wrinkled than I though I was. Everyone says I look younger though. I did it for my health and have never regretted my DS for a second. Now I think I can live a whole lot longer and enjoy my life so much more.

I have a friend that doesn't post on any forums who had the DS at age 62. She has done great, and the improvements in her health and mobility are astounding.

My father had his DS at 63. He's pretty sure he'd be dead by now if he did not have surgery. Good luck!

I am 63 and had my DS 71/2 months ago. Mine was a revision so a little riskier than a normal DS but I have done great- no problems and no regrets. I have a friend who had the RNY at the same time I had my DS and she was 70 and she has done really well too. I personally would never do the RNY again but she didn't have the option. I love the DS . I don't lose as fast as some but I have lost 76lbs and feel so much better and so much more healthy. I can do things I could never have done 9 months ago. I actually had to get a special bag of pretzels the other day at WalMart and of course it was on the bottom shelf and shoved all the way back. I got down on my hands and knees and reached way in there to get that bag of pretzels and got up! 8 months ago I would never have considered it because I knew I would never get back up! I play with my grandbabies and I can even cross my legs without any problems! I don't get tired when I am out walking and can actually fit comfortably in a booth to eat ( can't fit much in my stomach but its all about the great company anyway!)

Good luck!

My dad had BPD/DS at 57 years old, heavy all his life, never regretted one day since. Insulin for diabetes for 15 years and no more injections!! Gave him 10 years on his life for sure. BUT he has to br more strict with his diet than me, as I had same surgery, but Im 30 years younger and can recover from a few pounds a lot easier than him. But hasnt put but 3-5 lbs back on in over 10 years. Good luck.
