DS Considering resleeve or revision to medial... thoughts please

Hi all,

I had a DS in 2007.  My lowest weight was 190 (5'7)..over the past 2 years I have gotten back up to 225.  I am in the process of looking into a revision with Dr. Shrikath here in Seattle.  He has given me two choices.  Re-sleeve (b/c it is stretched)  or convert to medial.  The medial I don't know much about and it would be a hybrid.  With the medial, He would lengthen my common channel b/c it is 75cm now and I am having some issues with anemia, osteo, vit dif. .

I know I need to get back on track. Things went well after the ds, weight was coming off.. met my now husband and stopped thinking about doing the things that needed to be done.  I am wanting to to a revision to get back on track and get down to my goal weight of 165ish..  I don't know yet if insurance will approve and I am not sure if it is worth the risk of another surgery.. still trying to figure out what to do.

Any thoughts??

Thanks

Catherine

If you want to get your weight down, resleeve. You can bring your nutritional levels up with supplements and I would suggest a visit to Vitalady in Puyallup, let her take a look at your labs and give you some vitamin and protein advice. If your protein is low, you won't absorb your vitamins well either. It's all connected.

Yes.. want to get the weight down.... I have gotten all my labs done I am also seeing a nutritionist and the revision surgeon and am back on track with good vit and protein supplements.

I do know it's vital to get back to basics, do support groups (which I didn't do before), continue to meet with this nutritionist (covered 10 free visits per year) and maybe even do other counseling to deal with the strong emotional drivers.

I would consider a revision as an absolute last resort, for the risks involved.  I agree to consult with Vitalady or others out here and do a good look at the foods you're eating.  Perhaps some serious paying attention to carbs is all you need to start losing again.   I  can eat a LOT and I try to get my fill of protein and veggies before I turn to other items, and I know how seductive they are.

Yes.. I am reallyyyyyy concerned about the risks...I just don't know that I can do it without.. I am hungry all the time.. Yessss I need to look at the food for sure. I have started also adding protein shakes which do help with hunger and cravings.

Just for your info............
most nutritionist have no idea what/how we need to eat.
So....if she/he tells you to eat what we consider diet food, like low fat, high carb, lots of veggies and fruit, then the nutritionist knows nothing about the DS diet.

in order for you to lose again like you did at the beginning, you need to stay on a low carb, high protein and med/high fat diet.

A minimum of 125 gm of protein a day, and less then 50 gm of carbs, less then 30 is even better for weightloss.

good luck

Breads, cookies, sugary stuffs are addicting.  I enjoy some every day nowadays, however I do feel times where my cravings are going out of control.  When this happens I do some protein-loading for a few days and they get under control.  If you're genuinely hungry, then munch on some cheese or beef jerky instead of grabbing cookies, crackers and chips.  It sucks because protein takes so much effort to pull together to snack on by comparison.  I make easy to grab-and-go items that are as easy as a cookie jar.  Cut cheese into bite-size chunks, make cheese crisps and keep in a baggie, etc.  You may have cravings masking as hunger.  It's worth a try...
