Hi everyone.  I am nearing the end of the process to have WLS.  I was approved for VS by Insurer but went for a second opinion.  Saw Dr. Prachand with intention of just getting second opinion with regard to whether to have sleeve or bypass.  He recommended neither but DS instead.  I really liked him. He spent a lot of time with me at visit.  That being said, having WLS is scary.  I gave a young child and I want to be healthier for him.  My bmi is about 54.  No diabetes, just some acid and starting to fall apart.  I have so many worries.  What if I make my health worse, not better by having DS?  What if I have uncontrollable bathroom issues - this is a big one for me.  I work in an office and spend all day with others.  In any event, it have scanned some of the topics and there is a lot of great info on this forum. I guess I'm just scared and that is natural... But no less scary....

Welcome!

Yes, the whole business of having any kind of bariatric surgery is scary. but you were so very, very fortunate to consult with a surgeon *****commended the Ds for you, instead of just steering you to an operation less likely to be successful for you just because it's what he does (and doesn't do the DS!)

The DS has the best statistics of any bariatric surgery for percentage excess weight loss, for maintenance of that weight loss, and for resolution of almost all comorbidities. While it works well for the "lightweights", it is esp valuable for those with higher bmi's. While there are people who are successful with sleeve or gastric bypass, it is much more likely that you will be successful and sustain that success with the DS.

As far as bathroom issue go, most people learn what foods cause issues and learn to avoid them when they are going to be around other people or in an office environment. I'm not trying to say that it can't be a problem, but usually it's a managable thing. And frankly, I've met people with gastric bypass with "bathroom issues" too, as well as issues with dumping or, of greater concern at least to me, with inability to get even close to a normal weight.

There is no perfect operation. For me, the great results with the DS was far more important than any other factor. You will have to make your own decision, but you're doing your research and you'll make an informed decision.

Yep, normal to be scared! Been there, done that 3 times.

Welcome aboard and glad to see you are searching all your options. With your BMI I think you will come to discover that the DS will be your best option, if not truly your only option.

Good luck to you on your journey!

With your BMI, the DS would be perfect for you.  Many of us have one giant poo first thing in the morning, and nothing more throughout the day.  The key is staying away from foods that give bad effects.  I'm a corporate trainer and often doing presentations in front of a group, and it hasn't stopped me once.

Hello!  When I started my research into WLS, I assumed I would have the RnY- I had never heard of the DS.  I thank my lucky stars every day that the surgeon I picked offered all of the procedures, and guided me through the process of learning about all of them, and to the eventual conclusion that the DS was the only right choice for me.  I can't imagine how different life would be with another surgery.

Welcome!  I think you'll find the DS to be the best option for you.  Regarding bathroom issues, as some others stated, it's manageable based on what you eat.

Welcome!

It is normal to be afraid.

As long as you can make a commitment to vitamin and protein supplementation, the DS is an excellent choice for long term success.  Bathroom issues can, almost always, be managed by what one eats.

Remember, in the end, it is your health.  Take care of it and you will be fine.

Best wishes!
